The Comics Page: Rich Koslowski

In a previous comics blogging life not so long ago, you may have read my first look piece about Rich Koslowski's newest project, B.B. Wolf & The L.P.s, in collaboration with writer Johnnie Arnold.

Rich has been a very busy guy lately, completing B.B. Wolf in his gorgeous ink wash style (very similar to his work on the award-winning Three Fingers and The List), starting a new Three Geeks GN (a movie based on the trio is in the works) and staying ahead of schedule on his first assignment for the House of Ideas, scripting a 12-part story arc about the new Guardian for Marvel Comics Presents. And, that list doesn't include his freelance endeavors for other publishers including Archie Comics and Devil's Due (Family Guy).

Watching from the sidelines since the debut of Three Fingers five years ago, I'm glad to see Rich's "star" is finally ascending in the comics industry, and it's about time...

BTW, Rich pens one of the more politically incorrect and funnier creator blogs around, no doubt a product of his awesome storytelling, a gregarious nature (that belies a heart of gold) and a frighteningly acidic sense of humor (especially when I'm within earshot).

Trick or Treat: George Clooney as G.I. Joe?

The headline says it all (many thanks to USA Today's OTHER pop culture blogger Ann Oldenburg) for this link to an ISEB.com story posted Monday afternoon. As of this writing, however, Dark Horizons -- the go-to site for movie news with a genre slant -- hasn't posted anything about it, so I suggest taking this with a huge grain...

For those Bat-fans with long memories -- Batman and Robin, anyone? -- MOVE ON!

Devil's Due Comic Books Coming to Mobile Phones Through uclick

Devil's Due comicsPress Release

Devil's Due Publishing has announced an agreement with uclick, a leader in digital entertainment, that will bring several titles from their dynamic line of original comic book properties to mobile phones.

The Devil's Due titles will debut next year on uclick's GoComics Mobile Comic Book Reader, available on all major carriers including Sprint, Verizon and AT&T.

"We're always looking for ways to bring our comic books to new audiences," said Josh Blaylock, President of Devil's Due Publishing, "By partnering with uclick we have the opportunity to get our books to readers who might have never set foot in a comic shop before. uclick is pioneering the delivery of comic books to the mobile phone market, and I'm proud that Devil's Due is able to be a part of their GoComics lineup."

Known for spearheading the "'80s Revival" in comics with the revamp of G.I. Joe in 2001, Devil's Due has gone on to become one of the largest comic book publishers in the United States. The publisher's diverse line of original comic book properties includes Sheena: Queen of the Jungle, Lost Squad, Voltron, the cult-favorite Hack/Slash, and the upcoming Mercy Sparx.

The new additions to uclick's GoComics mobile comic book lineup are a cross-section of Devil's Due's extensive publishing output from the past, present and near future, including:

Xombie: An undead man fights to protect human lives from evil zombies.
Drafted: An alien invasion forces our world to unite like never before.
Kore: A blundering college slacker releases evil from an ancient tomb.
Breakdown: A superhero becomes a deadly vigilante after the murder of his family.
Misplaced: A powerful outcast from Utopia finds her new life on Earth.
Defex: Five student scientists discover hidden powers in human DNA.
Penguin Brothers: Three teenage penguins become the heroes of Chill City, Antarctica.
Warstone: Only a long lost half-elf, half- human can stop a dark sorcerer from ruling the Earth.
Mercy Sparx: A devil girl is contracted by Heaven to hunt down rogue angels.

These new titles join a diverse collection of exciting comic books optimized by GoComics for mobile phone screens. The star-studded lineup includes Jeff Smith's wildly popular Bone series; the Shakti-style epics of Virgin Comics; the sci-fi fantasy hits GØDLAND and Elephantmen; the webcomic-turned- comic-book PvP; the manga and anime horror import Guilstein; high-flying martial arts fun starring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and many more. The Mobile Comic Book Reader is available on all major carriers, including Sprint, Verizon and AT&T.

"In just a few short years, Devil's Due grew from a small publisher into a Death Star-esque, fully operational comic books powerhouse," said uclick Manager of Product Development Harold Sipe. "The GoComics Devil's Due collection is made up of exciting original material, and we're happy to be delivering these titles to mobile comic book readers."

G.I. Joe Leaps From the Toy Box and Comic Books to the Silver Screen... A Good Thing or Not?

G.I. Joe imageIn advance of expiring contracts between the major movie studios and the various guilds that make them -- speculation is rampant all over fandom and Hollyweird, particularly in the LA Times, about Warner's real chances of launching a Justice League of America movie -- over the next 10 months, at least one comics-inspired project will make the deadline in addition to Watchmen for the summer of 2009.

On the heels of its success with another toy-themed movie this summer, Paramount put G.I. Joe on the fast track, with Stephen Sommers, director of the financially successful Mummy films and Van Helsing, getting the nod, according to Variety.

Sommers' G.I. Joe plans mirror those of the Paramount's successful push for Hasbro's other toy to comic book to feature film in Transformers, including a trailer ready by 2009's Super Bowl XLIII to pump up the interest, Variety says. Also, the emphasis of G.I. Joe who was known for many years in the comics world under the tagline A Real American Hero has been broadened to take on a more international look these days.

Don't know if a pending movie will do anything for the fiduciary future of G.I. Joe at Devil's Due Publishing. That said, filmmakers agree Marvel's 155-issue comics run was as instrumental for creating much of the pending movie's backstory as it was for Transformers.

The incredibly popular online animated series makes its jump into comic books! Dirge is an undead man with a mind of his own, who struggles to find the meaning of unlife -- all the while fighting to protect human lives from evil zombies! Don't miss this epic quest to save humanity!

"2007 is not the year of the zombie. It is the Year Of The Xombie!" ~ geeksofdoom.com

"Xombie: Reanimated isn't your typical zombie comic story. a lighter, more action-oriented story. Xombie Reanimated is light and fun. 8/10" ~thecomicsreview.com

The artwork captures the feeling of the flash series. And, as it's done by the creator of said series, there's no chance of it not maintaining the feel that made it such a hit on the internet. If you're a fan of the series, or just curious, definitely add this to your pull list. ~215ink.com

XOMBIE is an altogether different book than most zombie books around. The story is entertaining. The fast pace and quick action really helping this book stand out in today's decompression-palooza. We need more fun books – Xombie supplies that. The art is dynamic, exciting, and most importantly – fun! In conclusion, Xombie is a fun book. If you're tired of the dark, depressing books out today, or just want a little break from the death and suffering – Xombie is the book for you. ~SilverBulletComics.com

Right off the bat, this is the most fun I've had reading a comic in a long time. There are parts of this book that are just flat out funny. Things start off at a fast pace and it's one long entertaining sprint to the end. Xombie Reanimated #1 is action-packed and innovative. It's a healthy mix of classic zombie movies like Re-Animator, Army of Darkness, and Lucio Fulci's Zombie. The artwork by Nate Lovett is eye-popping and loose. Characters come to life on the page. His visuals serve as the perfect complement to James Farr's tightly scripted scenes. This is a great first issue. 10 / 10 ~comicaddiction.com

The triumph of Xombie is that it can appeal to both young and older readers. The art and the young protagonist skews the tale to a younger audience while the action, post-zombie apocalypse setting and more philosophical connotations of life and duty make Xombie worthwhile material for an older audience. ~comicreaders.com

I thought it was going to be just one more story of mindless flesh-eating art. I was wrong. I am completely hooked on this one. Give this title a chance. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. ~comicsalliance.com

Nightwolf in Development with Fox

Nightwolf: the Price #1 coverPress Release

Marty Adelstein and 20th Century Fox Television have struck a deal to develop the comic book series by VLE Comics' Stephen L. Antczak, published by Devil's Due, about a werewolf turned anti-hero as an ongoing television series.

Nightwolf focuses on Davey Doyle, a man determined to find a way to redeem himself when his parent die by his own hand thanks to a curse that causes him to transform into a monstrous killer during every full moon. By stalking the streets of Quad City, Doyle tracks the most sinister individuals he can find for the perfect hunt when he is forced to unleash the demon within. In his eyes, if this creature must stalk human prey, at least he may hunt those who deserve it.

Adelstein is best known for his involvement with the runaway hit television series Prison Break, a series that Nightwolf's creator admires.

"Prison Break is a show you can really sink your teeth into, and doesn't pander to the lowest common denominator" said Antczak, "Like the world of Nightwolf, it doesn't conform to what comic book fans expect from the typical superhero tale."

Adelstein Productions is considering both broadcast and cable network potential for the series, and is currently searching for a writer for the pilot.

"This marks Devil's Due's first foray into television, following a string of film options." said DDP president Josh Blaylock. "The fact that we landed a project with someone of Marty's caliber is... well, I have to pinch myself to be sure it's all real."

Halloween Comes to Devil's Due

Press Release

Compass International Pictures, Inc. and Devil's Due Publishing, Inc. join forces to launch a bone chilling comic book series based on the original Halloween movie!

With the 30th Anniversary of the Halloween franchise fast approaching, the property has enjoyed a long and healthy success, and Devil's Due Publishing is proud to be telling the new horrific tales of slasher Michael Myers. "We've done a number of horror titles in the past, and I love them all, but there's something extra special about bringing the original to the comic page," said Josh Blaylock, president of DDP. "He's the big daddy of hard-to-kill slashers."

Compass' Malek Akkad has been working closely on the new Halloween film to be released in 2008, but despite his busy schedule was personally involved in selecting Devil's Due for the property's new comic home. "Devil's Due has a track record for quality horror comics perfect for Halloween and we are working closely with them, said Akkad. " It is important to us to bring a sense of the original Michael Myers film to this series."

Devil's Due Taken Over by Spooks

Press Release

SPOOKS is the name of a secret branch of the government that guards humanity from things that go bump in the night, and when the king of all vampires allies with the deadliest of witches, it unleashes an invasion of classic monsters on Washington DC, calling the SPOOKS team into action.

Devil's Due will publish the comic book as a four issue miniseries in early to mid 2008. The concept, created by Ryan Schifrin (director of the cult horror hit Abominable) and Daniel Alter ( producer: Hitman) has been in the works for two years. When legendary fantasy author RA Salvatore (Forgotten Realms, DemonWars) and Larry Hama (G.I.Joe, Wolverine) came on board it was all the series needed.

"This series is going to be a blast," says DDP President Josh Blaylock. "Larry is developing the SPOOKS agents, adding a decidedly realistic military element to the organization while Salvatore is focusing on the monsters. Honestly, can it get any better than that?"

"This is epic fantasy, but instead of castles and dragons it's Halloween iconography - vampires, witches, werewolves and the Headless Horseman," said Schifrin "I think of it as GI JOE meets Monster Squad, but with massive Lord of the Rings style battles."

"Spooks is the ultimate double entendre," adds Alter. " It's about a covert unit in the government, only their pervue isn't terrorism or drugs or weapons trafficking. Its things that go bump in the night!"

When asked about the unique military influences of SPOOKS Larry Hama replied, "Have you ever wondered what happens when you hit a vampire with a high-velocity discarding-sabot anti-tank round that has an ash-wood stake core-penetrator instead of depleted uranium?" Maybe you haven't, but Larry has!
