On the plus side, at least there's a shot of George Takei laughing, and there's never anything wrong with that.

▌▌▌▌▌▌ I just got paid $7500 working off my computer this month. And if you think that's cool, my divorced friend has twin toddlers and made over $8k her first month. It feels so good making so much money when other people have to work for so much less. This is what I do, ►►►►►►WIKI25.COM

Great reality show. No actors involved. Real nerds in action.

January 13 2013 at 10:19 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyjust why? also, why are people so obsessed with labels!? i do really hope they are just actors. either way, it surely can't be real. but then, America :P [i can say that i'm welsh]
January 13 2013 at 3:52 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThere is more to "nerd culture" than comics and video games. My question for the show is what about a sports nerd(fantasy football baseball etc...) or reenactments.? Or television? or the movies? Comedy? Nah it looks like they are going to go for the stereotypical and obvious and not try that hard. Another question that needs to be asked is: "Is this real?" They could be all actors.
January 13 2013 at 10:03 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThere actually is a comedy show about a fantasy football league:. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_League
Not a "reality show" but in the same vein as Big Bang.
I watched it and my main thought was: sweet suits of armour. I wonder if they got to keep them?
January 12 2013 at 6:29 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWell, my first observation is that this apparently makes American Idol look like Citizen Kane.
But more importantly I'd like to ask this: when are people going to admit that nerds in the traditional sense no longer exist? The Avengers grossed a gazillion dollars, Word of Warcraft has 8 million+ subscribers, Tolkein's works are a major movie franchise and people line up overnight to buy Apple products. "Nerd" hobbies aren't marginal anymore, we're the mainstream.
You don't have to be a nerd to see or like "Avengers". It's targeted to the general public mainly with easter eggs for the fans of the comic.
January 13 2013 at 9:57 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDid you see the part where I said nerd hobbies are now mainstream rather than marginal? That was kinda my whole point. Thanks for restating it in simpler terms though.
January 13 2013 at 11:44 AM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate downSince when have "superhero movies" been "nerd hobbies"? The original Superman, Burton's Batman, the Mask, these have always been mainstream. Hell, the original Superman and Batman comics were also mainstream, selling in the millions of copies to anyone who walked by a newsstand.
You're trying to make a distinction about content that doesn't exist. The distinction comes down to exposure. Comics today do not have mainstream exposure. Movies do. That hasn't changed in the last two decades.
And not even a single chuckle was given.
January 12 2013 at 12:09 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis is nerd black-face.
Real nerds should be insulted by this type of depiction of nerd culture.
I'm more offended by the comparison of blackface, something actually used to oppress an entire race of people, and this show, which is just dumb.
January 12 2013 at 12:41 PM Report abuse Permalink +9 rate up rate down ReplyYeah, comparing things like this and "Big Bang Theory" to minstrel shows needs to stop yesterday.
January 12 2013 at 6:15 PM Report abuse Permalink +7 rate up rate downAlso the whole "real nerds" thing. Like, is Jgp72 down there not really a nerd just because he likes the looks of this show?
January 12 2013 at 12:43 PM Report abuse Permalink +5 rate up rate down ReplyIf you look past the show's framing, you can tell all those contestants are genuine and thought this show would be a fun, affirming celebration of their culture. Then it goes through editing and comes out as something clearly all about making fun of them for their eccentricities. It's pretty sad.
Casting calls for reality shows need to be treated with the same scrutiny as phishing scams. They want you to believe they're looking for the best, but they're only looking for the most gullible.
Yeah, well. You got to be pretty naive.
