Sad news from Florida: Peter David
, the veteran writer known for his work on Marvel's X-Factor
and Incredible Hulk
, DC's Young Justice
and numerous Star Trek
novels and comic books, has suffered a stroke while on vacation and lost movement on the right side of his body.
David broke the news himself on his blog yesterday
, writing "I cannot see properly and I cannot move my right arm or leg." His wife Katheleen updated the situation in a more in-depth blog post later
. "We have a diagnosis, which is a small stroke in the Pons section of his brain," she wrote. "Now we have to figure out where we go from here and how we get Peter back to what he was before the stroke."
Kathleen went on to explain that "he has lost most of the use of his right arm, his right leg is incredibly weak, the vision in his right eye is blurry, and the right side of his face is drooping slightly. But the brain is there with all its quips and quick retorts. He has had the nurses laughing a lot."
Treatment options are currently being considered; strokes that affect the pons area of the brainstem vary in severity and treatment, as the pons acts as a "junction box" for nerves controlling movement and balance within the body, and it isn't always clear what exactly has been damaged by the stroke initially.
Our thoughts are with the David family, as are our hopes for a fast and full recovery.
