The poster is limited to 500 copies, and each is signed and numbered. Lavery has made them available to purchase now in three different sizes: 13" x 19", 16" x 24" and 24" x 36".

There's a part of this that really wants to like this. Yet I feel like it fails to fulfill it's central premise. If it's the evolution of batman shouldn't it be images of Batman and not Bat Symbols? Or a split in the center to divide the comic iterations from the film. I don't want to be a pessimist about it, and I hope this isn't the case, but this feels like a cash grab. From the Nolan film inspired Batman and the cityscape behind him, to the fact that it really is just a smattering of Bat Symbols against a dull grey background. Looking at her work here: http://calmtheham.com/search?q=Cathryn+Lavery , it really does seem like she prefers a simplistic approach to her work. Of course this is all my personal criticism and holds no actual bearing on the validity of the work. Considering most of her work is movie based I myself lean more towards "cash grab" as the motivation behind it, considering the bat work of hers I saw was all Nolan, but eh. With a bit of refinement this is definitely a concept that would appeal to a lot of Bat-fans. Que Sera, Sera, such is the life of a creator. Not every piece can be a masterpiece. This seems to have just been an unfortunate misfire.

And I don't recognise the symbol attributed to Batman Begins at all. Was it used in some sort of promotional material or something? It definitely does not appear in the film.
What with all the other inaccuracies that everybody else has pointed out, this really is poorly done.
I hope Batman updates his batarang design with every new logo.
December 18 2012 at 9:07 AM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down Replythis is cool, my first comment on this site after reading for long and I get to comment on my favorite character!!! Anyways insightful article, the non-canon batman books have weird symbols though.
LOL at the arrows pointing outwards in the dark knight of the round table symbol!!!
Wow 30 different versions of the Batman Logo! Wow Cathryn Lavery what brilliant piece is next? 30 different versions of the Wopper? 30 different versions of Coke cans? I cannot possibly imagine the countless minutes that went into this piece of art. The Google searches alone..... Brava Cathryn, Brava! Well done.

December 18 2012 at 1:43 AM Report abuse Permalink +3 rate up rate down ReplyThat's not really a valid response. Criticism almost always takes less effort than production and it doesn't make the criticism wrong.

December 17 2012 at 10:38 PM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyUpon closer inspection... yeah, the logos and their origins are a little chaotic. Some come from suits, some come from titles or covers... and perhaps most glaringly, the DCAU batlogo which first appeared in The New Batman Adventures is attributed to the Batman Vengeance game. I think a more complete and more informative collection of batlogos could be made.
December 17 2012 at 10:30 PM Report abuse Permalink +6 rate up rate down ReplyDefinitely. And the one attributed to The Batman Chronicles was in heavy rotation at least as far back as Batman '89, and my recollection is that it predated that movie by some time too.
December 18 2012 at 1:47 AM Report abuse Permalink +2 rate up rate down ReplyIn terms of design, this is weak, at best. Is this an evolution of Bat symbol or Bat logos? Both? I don't see how any self respecting designer could have the nerve to sell this, at any price.
