Finally, an October Surprise for this year's US Presidential Election that we think is actually worthy of the title. Forget Donald Trump being nosy about passports and college applications, the real news is that Buffy and Firefly creator (and Avengers screenwriter and director) Joss Whedon is endorsing Mitt Romney - and he's asking you to, as well. Click through to watch his explanation, and gain a whole new desire to learn parkour.
Showing off his domestic side - Friends, just look how clean that kitchen is - as he admits that "it's a very different world now" compared with when Barack Obama was voted into office four years ago, Whedon makes the often overlooked argument that Republican candidate Mitt Romney is the only choice for voters who can't wait to see America become a harsh and unforgiving playground for the undead:
The video is just the latest in a series of celebrity YouTube endorsements for Obama, following on the heels of Lena Dunham's apparently controversial "Your First Time" video from last week. Not all celebrities are coming out in favor of the Democratic candidate on the video hosting service, however; the Romney/Ryan ticket last week picked up Meat Loaf's vote. He would do anything for love but vote for the sitting President, apparently.
With just over a week to go until the actual election, how likely do you think it is that we could get a Walking Dead cast response to Whedon's endorsement of Romney on behalf of the zombie apocalypse...?
I kept seeing Zombies walking outside Whedon's home in that video. And one desperate human in a white station wagon trying to run over them! I swear!! :O
The problem with labeling anyone extreme left wing or extreme right wing is deciding where the center line is. I live in Ma and while Romney never impressed me as governor Obama has never impressed me as president.
A silly video by someone who should stick to making movies because he knows squat about politics.
Though I will say it's a masterpiece of irony, given that in Firefly he portrayed the Alliance as the bad guys, and yet here he is, supporting the side that's most like the Alliance, i.e., the Democrats.
(sigh) Here we go again. The readers of this site will begin bashing each other because of their political views. Please don't lower yourselves into the cesspool again, people.
Wit: the antidote to stupidity. Oh, and if a performer who you enjoy has poilitcal views that actually alienate you, YOU are part of the problem with the world (unless the presentation of those views are so morally repugnant, like Ted Nugent, but who am I kidding, I never liked The Nuge anyway).
On a similar note, I kinda sorta enjoyed the Lena Dunham video because I do think it's clever, but I enjoyed more the stupendously moronic self-righteous outrage from the right much more.
I thought that this was cute. It was snappy writing. And I'm a conservative! However, my liberal co-worker saw it and was immediately dismayed that a movie director would take such a public stance on politics. He made a good point that he had engendered so much good will with the general public, that to alienate roughly half of them by making this video was a really bad idea. And I came to agree with him.
I still think it's good writing. And aside from the politics behind it, I thought it was good. But, Joss Whedon is in the public eye more than ever. Maybe it's bad business to do something like this?
Frankly, the only person who has to be or should be concerned about the potential effects to Joss Whedon's career by this is Joss Whedon, and given that most of his works have been fairly outspoken about his left-wing political beliefs anyway, I'm not sure he'd be too bothered by this possibility. I kind of get the feeling that "The Avengers 2" will be a pretty big hit regardless of how many Romney supporters get ticked by this video.
Frankly, even leaving aside the slightly alarming implication here that artists should shut up about their political beliefs out of fear of alienating paying customers who they have the gall to disagree with, I'd rather have an artist who was willing to speak his or her mind about something rather than someone who meekly kept quiet and tried to please everyone. And I'm not even that big a fan of Joss Whedon.
And even if Whedon was intentionally trying to alienate Romney supporters (rather than throwing his hat into the political wing), there's an entire liberal-bent world out there who's going to see Avengers 2 anyway.
I would be so much happier if I could chose between Obama, Romney and a One Eyed One Horned Flying Purple People Eater. Doesn't matter much which way we vote though, the country is doomed. Our economy shot, on industrial base nearly gone and we've given up the frontier. Welcome to Europe in 1912.
I like when anything political is put on Comics Alliance because even if it is meant to just give everyone a good chuckle I get to also enjoy the trolls from both party coming out of the woodwork to spout off political theory as if they know what the hell they are talking about and haven't just been watching hours of Fox News/MSNBC being inundated with one party's viewpoint.
In other words, I get a good giggle from reading comments.
I agree with Whedon. It was unbelievable living in Massachusetts under Romney. He made abortion illegal, made everyone get identification cards and killed poor people. Oh **** my mistake he was competent and governed the state under an unprecedented time of prosperity.
He did such a great job, and made so many friends, that he's losing his home state by 20 points. His other home state, Michigan (where his dad was governor), will also be won by Obama.
And he had a liberal house to deal with, a liberal state house that had to override many of his vetoes. I'm sure he'd stay Moderate Mitt in the WH though, what with the completely reasonable House Republicans that do want to make things like abortion illegal, and want to make undocumented immigrants' lives so bad that they "self-deport."
Seriously, the Mitt from '02 has overwritten himself several times since then, but you still think he's the moderate governor of Massachusetts?
