If you watch a lot of cartoons, chances are that you've seen Brianne Drouhard's work. The animator has worked as a character designer on
Teen Titans,
Class of 3000,
Transformers: Animated and
The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and she's the director and producer of
Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld, the new series of DC Nation shorts. She's also the creator of the children's book
Billie the Unicorn, which exists both in dead tree format and as
an interactive iPad and iPhone app. Predictably, her artwork is bursting with friendly colors and joyful expressions, and much of it focuses on superpowered ladies who, for all of their adorableness, can hold their own in a fight.
Drouhard happily wears her influences on her sleeve, from the animation of Hanna-Barbera and Rankin/Bass to magical girl anime and the works of Osamu Tezuka. Her background in traditional animation pops off the page in her character design, body language and her surprising use of soft colors. You can keep up with her latest illustrations and
Amethyst news on
her blog, and see more of her artwork on
her deviantART page.
