eBooks may eventually hinder our ability to judge books by their covers, but for now at least, it's hard not to be lured by an especially intriguing illustration. But before we can judge the cover, an artist has to judge the book, to find the morsel inside that will bring out just the right image. Sarah Marino has explored several classic (and a few not-so-classic) novels, creating her own versions of the perfect book cover.
Marino created these book covers as her senior thesis project at the Ringling College of Art and Design. I especially love her interpretation of The Great Gatsby, with all those rich, empty clothes sitting at the bottom of the swimming pool. Marino currently works as a visual development artist at Reel FX Creative Studio, but her own paintings and illustrations stand strongly on their own. She has a real way with luminosity, creating scenes that glow with both natural and otherworldly light.
