The extraordinary success of The Avengers movie
this summer is making waves across Disney and Marvel's other divisions: Not only are fans seeing this year's launch of Avengers Assemble
and the modification of character costumes to reflect the look of the film in the comics division, but fans can expect to see a lot more of the team on television next year
... even if current animated series Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes
won't be the vessel. In an interview with TV Guide
, Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb confirmed reports that the newly-announced second season of Ultimate Spider-Man
will see Peter Parker teaming up with the Avengers, as well as mining next month's The Amazing Spider-Man
movie for villainous material:
The Avengers is the No. 3 movie of all-time and there's a brand new Spider-Man movie that's coming out on July 3. We want [this series] to be relevant to those films. There will be more stories that feature those Avengers characters - Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, the Hulk, they'll all be coming back in Season 2. But even more exciting to us is that we're going to be able to explore the villain from this summer's Amazing Spider-Man [movie]. Curt Connors has been playing a role throughout all of Season 1, and finally in Season 2, longtime Spidey fans and Marvel fans will get to see his transformation into the Lizard.
Perhaps more importantly for fans of the current Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes
cartoon on Disney XD, Loeb also finally confirms rumors of the new series that'll replace it:
The Avengers movie has been the ambassador to the world for the Marvel Universe so we want a show that has the feel and the tone and the incredible adventures like that movie. So the next project that we're working on - and this is down in our lab, top secret, with the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents protecting us at all costs - is Marvel's Avengers Assemble, which will be a brand new and really extraordinary looking animated series dealing with the Avengers in that same world... We're still very early on in the process and we don't give away too much. It's safe to say that we're looking at a show that more closely echoes the tone and the feel of the movie.
Two further tidbits are revealed about the new series; firstly, the show will be animated using "a unique combination of 2D and CG," with Eric Radomski -- a veteran of Batman The Animated Series
and HBO's Spawn
, among many other superhero cartoons -- in charge of production. Perhaps more interestingly, the Avengers will be getting a new member who'll serve as the audience's point-of-view when Falcon signs up for duty.
Marvel's Avengers Assemble
isn't the only new series Loeb found himself talking about; he also teased the already-announced Hulk And The Agents of SMASH
animated show, with a piece of promotional art that I suspect may be new...
No premiere dates have been given for either Avengers Assemble
; Ultimate Spider-Man
and Earth's Mightiest Heroes
are currently continuing in the Marvel Universe
block running on Sunday mornings at 11 a.m. on Disney XD.
