Parting Shot: The Superman Musical Is Like Watching a Fan Film Fever Dream from the '70s

Wow, I need to find this movie. It's just so hilariously bad.

I vaguely remember this. Caught it late at night. My bedtime was mad early back then, so maybe it seemed like late-night.

A theater in Dallas did a reworking of the book on the musical not terribly long ago.

I am one of the biggest Superman fans out there, but I can honestly say this would make me hate him VERY quickly if this sort of thing were still airing. Wow... just wow.

Let's see: So far I identify Malachi Throne, David Wayne and Kenneth Mars among the performers.

The original show had a brief run on Broadway in 1966. That made it concurrent with the Batman TV series -- which kind of gives you the sensibility it was aiming for: a tongue-in-cheek Pop Art commentary on a popular culture fiction.

Batman did it much better though, and became a well-remembered hit, while the Superman version is virtually forgotten.

This is an episode in Superman's history I wouldn't mind seeing wiped from real life continuity.
