Twitter Reacts to the Giant Psychic Space Octopus That Is the 'Watchmen' Prequel News

I love how a lot of people use the "League of Extarordinary Gentlemen" fallacy .

1.Most of the Characters are in the public domain, so Moore can do whatever he wants with them.
2.Moore didn't try to make that book a prequel to those books, just wanted to create a universe where they coexisted.
3.Moore didn't do it to make money he was rapidly losing due to shitty comics, and their poor sales.

So kindly shove that argument up your ass where it belongs.

On one hand, this stinks. They could be great comics based on the people involved but the idea of a bunch of minis from a story with a beginning and a end... on the other hand, everything that flips the finger to Alan "holier than thou" Moore has my endorsement.

"If, in 50 years time, the world is still here and Warner Brothers is gone and somebody wants to do a postmodern riff on Dr Manhattan, I've got nothing against the creators of such a thing -- my grief is only with the companies that own them. I would positively encourage people to pirate the characters I created."

I do get both sides. Alan Moore I'd say has the right to be angry, but DC is putting some good people together for this. I'm not going to say THIS WILL BE GREAT but I can't say for sure that it will be awful until I see it myself.

Kinda reminds me of what Penn Jillette said about BS (their show that I don't think I can say) on Showtime. They did the show, but it belonged to Showtime, so it was ultimately up to Showtime what to do with the episodes.

I liked a lot of points made by people saying that if Alan Moore can "reimagine" other people's characters, people should be able to make some stories based on his. Not that he HAS to like it, but it's sort of the nature of life. DC makes Watchmen prequels, Alan Moore doesn't like it, the fans decide what they think before or after. That's sort of a purely business view of it anyway. I guess on an artistic view, Alan would prefer that his story remain self contained permanently, because it is complete as it is. I totally understand that too, and I would probably feel the same way if I wrote Watchmen (AS IF).

Jess Nevins, a librarian at a Texas community college whose claim to fame is writing annotations for comic books, lashes out against Darwyn Cooke, award-winning graphic novel author, for not respecting Alan Moore's hypocritical wishes about no one else using his reskins of Charlton characters. Moore, meanwhile, writes and publishes unauthorized fan fiction of Voldemort from Harry Potter drugging and sexually assaulting a rape survivor at a rock concert, and of Satan and assorted motel employees gangraping HP Lovecraft's mother. Moore then, with no self-awareness whatsoever, calls something someone else did "completely shameless" and compares his own work in literary merit to Moby Dick. Just your average day in the superhero comics industry.

Comics as a medium would be done a huge favor if the big two shut down forever and the rest of the industry refocused on creator-owned self-contained graphic novels sold in bookstores instead of five-dollar pamphlets about childish male power fantasies flying around in spandex underwear trying desperately to convince everyone else that they are totally mature and for adults.

I've gotta agree that anything that puts more money into the pockets of comic creators can't be all bad. And really, more from JG Jones, Darwyn Cooke, Bermejo & Azzarello, etc.? At least it'll be pretty and pretty interesting, so what the hell...

Okay, I could really care less about more Watchmen.

That said, I would buy the HELL out of Watchmen Babies by Katie Cook.

I eagerly await the announcement of who takes over Nite-Owl after JMS flakes and can't meet his deadlines.
