Mattel's 'DC All-Stars' 2012 Action Figure Line to Include 'New 52' Superman, the Flash & More

Action figure fans have known about DC Direct's upcoming "New 52" figures for awhile, but Mattel will be delivering its share of updated toys in 2012 as well. CBR got a first look at Mattel's second wave of DC All-Stars figures coming in the new year, which will include Superman and the Flash in their "New 52" looks, plus Red Robin and Supergirl (the evil one in the black costume) in costumes from DC's previous continuity. According to CBR's interview with Mattel's Associate Marketing Manager for DC Universe, Young Justice and Superman toys, Danielle McLachlan, additional characters sporting their new costumes from DC's relaunched titles will be available in 2012 as well. The only one from Mattel's 'DC All-Stars' Action Figure Line I would want would be the 'New 52' Superman. I like Mattel's version, but I think I like the version coming from DC Direct a little better. I just prefer DC Direct over Mattel.

That Supes head seems to be sculpted by the same Four Horseman sculptor who gave us Guy Gardner, Jonah Hex and a few of the Legion figures. Those particular sculpts always have a cartoony, mischievous quality that I don't feel matches Superman at all.

It's also noteworthy that they seemed to intentionally ignore the clutter and detailing from the Jim Lee designs for this Supes and Flash. Flash basically just looks like a Wally West figure.

Yeah, it is kind of odd how New 52 Superman features none of the little seams and lines and whatnots that define the new look. Also, he's not wearing his new action figure boots. (Is that ironic? I can't tell anymore... )

Flash seems to have his little lightning bolt mark on his forehead but nowhere else.

The new Superman and even the Supergirl figure are....not that great. :P

I am trying to give the benefit of doubt to the new costume for Supes, but it just looks so...uninspired. It graphically shows what some people complain about the character, that he's unrelatable and has a stick up his...up the seat of his pants. It's a bit like if I took a preacher and put a cape on him and threw blue paint on him, I could point out the same effect...

...just before I get arrested by the cops for assaulting the man of the cloth (but that is *besides the point*!! ;p ).

He looks very uptight and not very inspiring.

Gotta agree a bit with Justice!
Repainted same body for all of them... regardless of what they would actually be more akin to.
Just don't see Red Robin being that...... bulky....LOL
