Parting Shot: Bendis to Conclude 'Avengers' Run, Compares it to 'Breaking Bad'

In a twitter post Bendis wrote people don't like him because he doesn't write comics like it's 1974. I think people are more peeved at paying $4 for 20 pages of a story that takes 3 issues to get going and then resolves in a way where there's no real lasting impact on characters or the overall universe at all.

For example, I thought what Bendis was doing with the Hood during Osborn's reign as head of Shield was going to make him into the next great super villian. Instead the storyline just kinda fizzled out and made him seem like some kind of two-bit crook going on the lam. So when the Hood returned in Avengers snatching Infinity Gems, It seemed kinda ridiculous.

Finally,it's over.Thank God.

He may claim 200 printed issues, but if you remove the trade pacing, splash pages and set it to 1990's standards, I'd give him a generous 75 issues.

He may have written about 200 issues, but when you remove the decompression and splash pages, the actual count is about 45 issues.

Too late to save the Sentry but glad to hear he is gone. Bendis does some amazing solo work but he can't write a teambook to save his life.

Maybe now I will actually want to spend money/time reading an Avengers title

Nothing creates tension like nine panel grids of talking head interviews with 40 year old intellectual property fondly reminiscing about storylines from the seventies, followed by riveting walls of 'oral history' text. That's some cutting edge Ken Burns style storytelling.

I must say, I just never got into Bendis' Avengers. They didn't appeal to me. I read most of them but still they didn't hit me and I don't get the acclaim that most fans give him. If I had to choose one title of his that I liked, it would be Dark Avengers. Probably because he took the premise from early Thunderbolts.

Slott on Mighty Avengers was awesome. I hope they get him back on the Avengers soon, looks like his hands are full with Spider-man, so I don't have a lot of hope. No offense, but the Avengers (before Bendis took over) was really floundering. Like it or not, Bendis made some creative decisions and tried *something* different. Personally, I think the Avengers should have the big names of Marvel properties in the roster. I grew up reading West Coast, so I have a soft spot for second-stringers, but Avengers pre-Bendis seemed to contain those characters who could not sustain their own books. Avengers should be the top book at Marvel, I don't think it can get there unless they try something different than what's gone on before (including Bendis).

Thank god! I use to be the biggest Bendis fan, but feel that the last couple of years he's been churning out so much stuff that he kinda lost what made him great. Ultimate Spidey started going down hill the first time Peter got killed in ultimatum, his vanity books like Spiderwoman and Moon Knight are ho-hum, the first issue of Brilliant was utter garbage. The $12 I spent on the first 3 issues of new Ultimate Spidey have been wasted on a story that probably could have been told in a lot fewer pages. And now in the Avengers he's redoing his Osborn arc again?

Please Bendis, just drop everything for while(except Powers and Scarlet,which can be bi-monthly)
