This year, Fantagraphics put out the first volume in their Disney Duck hardcovers, collecting the best stories by Carl Barks, the legendary creator of Uncle Scrooge who defined Donald and his family for over 20 years. This one's centered around the famous "Lost in the Andes" -- known to more casual fans as "the one with the square eggs" -- and with its beautiful design, interesting bonus material and masterful all-ages storytelling, it's one of the few comics that I can wholeheartedly recommend to anyone. My Three Dollara

Indeed it is a handsome production. However, I think it's necessary to warn potential purchasers that it does contain material that is highly racist. Yes it's from a different time, which contextualizes why the material is present, although doesn't excuse it. I also understand why Fantagraphics wants to present the original, unedited content - I understand the argument for perserving original works of art, warts and all. I am not arguing that it shouldn't be in there, but rather that purchasers need to know it is so they can make a decision. I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere and I was very disappointed when I obtained my copy through pre-order and found the material in there. I bought it on numerous recommendations sight unseen. Had I known I would not have purchased it. This needs to be brought up in conversation or reviews about the material.

So, you bought a book reprinting a story from the 50ties and was surprised it had elements thypical for that time?? What is your problem?? Did you not know the comics were like that back then, or did you hope that something was taken away??
Anyway, I am just happy that publishers are alowed to print the materiale as is, and that you are able to read it as it were. You should be as well.

Everyone should buy a copy. The coloring is gorgeous. The cover and binding and gorgeous. The design elements and typography are gorgeous. And the stories are freaking great. Go. Buy.

Mmm, original colors! God bless Fantagraphics. Recent reprints of these tales have been covered with dubious digital color choices, particular some really out-of-place gradients. These versions look PERFECT!

God, no kidding. Horrible modern coloring choices completely killed the Gemstone EC Comics archives for me. From what I've seen, however, this book is absolutely gorgeous. I lust after it.

Those EC Archives books were awful. Got a bunch one Christmas, not knowing about the recoloring. I dumped them all on eBay and replaced them with the black and white sets. I'd rather have no color than digital.
