Check out this memorably quirky performance after the cut.

Neil Gaiman is having the worst mid-life crisis I have ever witnessed! This was not just bad, it's pathetic! Amanda Palmer is a clownish, amateur. What a pair of vulgarians. Also, Scientology alert! Moby won't discuss it with the press so this might be a whole nest of Sceinos.

November 03 2011 at 11:35 PM Report abuse Permalink +2 rate up rate down ReplyThe people who don't like this, I suspect, don't appreciate what Amanda Palmer and (especially) Stephen Merritt do. Merritt in particular is really on point here, and his voice is a thing of glory. Neil Gaiman and Moby are somewhat extraneous, it's true, but everyone there is clearly aware of that and keeping tongues in cheeks. My guess would be that they didn't have much chance to rehearse with Moby, and of course Gaiman's not a musician. Anyway, I like all four of these people (even if some Palmer songs are unlistenable, Moby has been annoyingly self-righteous at times, and Gaiman's not half the writer he was 15-20 years ago), and I thought this was fun.
Side note: dudes who have a problem with Amanda Palmer's grooming choices need to get the F over themselves. But we all already know that, right?
I love Stephen Merritt, and I think he's in great form here. And I truly and genuinely have absolutely no problem with Amanda Palmer's grooming habits. I will admit that, despite all of my best efforts to get "into" Amanda Palmer, I find myself constantly disappointed by her. But I also know that that's just a personal opinion; I'm not saying she's untalented, I just personally don't get her massive appeal. Most of the times I've seen her, I've felt the same way, that she's trying too hard, and that she uses these "shock tactics" (which I find to be tired) as ways to make up for other things. I totally dig the idea that she sings in a lower range, but I don't like it when she sings off key. I'm also saying this as a theatre professional and musician who lives in Boston; we run in a lot of the same circles, but I still find myself constantly disappointed by her, probably because of the hype built around her. Again, this is not a bad cover or performance; but awesome or memorable? That, I disagree.

December 05 2011 at 7:12 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI don't understand: were people expecting a good cover? I thought the fact that this was a joke was obvious from the start, from Moby looking confused and out-of-place to Gaiman just staring blankly in front of a toy piano (which had me laughing so hard that I cried a little).
