Calvin Ma Sculpts Some Serious Super Heroes [Art]

If you long for a series of sculptures that revere the aesthetic of Mezco's Mike Mignola-styled Hellboy toys while adding a flavor all their own, look no further than the work of Calvin Ma. Currently based in San Francisco, Ma is a sculptor with a background in industrial design and his skills shine brightly on his Batman, Captain America, Spider-Man, Wolverine, He-Man and Lion-O sculpts. In addition to his comic book and animation-based characters, Ma has also sculpted an outstanding collection of figures personifying elements and emotions that tell a story from head to toe. Space Cobra

They...kinda look all the same. I mean, there are some differences in clothing, like belts sculpted and a mask added, but really...the faces all are the same. Is he trying for a comment on mass-production (while making them look sad) or is he being lazy?

I mean, not to knock him, these are neat in a way, but I'd go for more differences, at least facially, even if I wanted to make a comment about mass-production.

I kind of feel like he's playing on how most comic book characters are formulaic in their appearances. He picked characters that all pretty much follow the same style...muscular guys in tights. His other pieces have a lot more character and variety so I think he was more restricted by his source material than anything.

These are fantastic. I highly recommend a spin through his official site for more really wonderful work. Though I could probably never afford it, I would love to have one of his pieces in my home.
