The old comics had Kory all about love. Why is it only about sex now? Should be both

November 30 2011 at 3:44 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI always like to think there are two sides of every story, in response to the over sexualization of Starfire I think I have come up with a moderately, if not over thought, explanation to her dramatic change from lovable permed sweet heart to bikini clad sex machine.
Starfire's history pre-Earth was brutal, the young sweet princess physically and sexually exploited under the explicit orders of her own sister. Twisted. Contrastingly instead of embracing the darkness and turning into a psycho villain she embraces the good in life, falls in love with Nightwing, becomes a respected super hero in her own right, can we say girl power ladies?
In the 52 reboot however she's done the 180, she's a cold, emotional shell, in control of her sexuality, clad in a barely there anything she's liberated, free. You would think that the rape and torture would have induced a little more conservative dress sense, but that's never been Starfire's style. However its not the dress sense, it's the attitude issue that we're more concerned about, Starfire used to be warm and caring, she moved on from a bad situation, but in the reboot she's nothing more than eye candy and a traveling vagina. Or is she?
The peeps at DC have tried to explain Starfire's new look and attitude with an alien culture approach, which us humans just don't get. What has been revealed in Starfire's history has not been changed all that significantly, she has still been sold off by her sister, this time for the good of Tamaran, but still the torture is expected to rattle you a little. Being presumptuous, I will presume that this is the case, and that despite the new Tamaran culture of short-attention span when it comes to all matters of the heart, that the trials Starfire endured from her slavery had at least some effect on her, which breeds my humble thesis below.
My thinking is that the closed off, I do what I want attitude may be the product on account of the slavery. Drawing from her previous history in 51 Starfire's treatment on the ship was brutal, in essence she experiences the same treatment in 52 (with the slight exception). On coming to Earth and earning her freedom she has moved on. In addition to this now she is a walking sex vassal. However this may be a defense mechanism, it's a stretch I know but perhaps since sex was used as a form of control over her, perhaps now sex for Starfire is a means of defense. In the past sex emancipated her, it made her weak, vulnerable at the hands of her masters/slave owners. Now in a means to maintain her freedom, Starfire perhaps believes that that the use of sex is necessary in order to establish her control and dominance over others (thereby disabling anybody from doing so to her). Which might explain her sleeping with everyone in sight.
However in conjunction with the over sexualization of Catwoman, Star Sapphire, Harley Quinn and the general consensus of female characters in DC, I'm prepared to say that this is probably not the case.
Just when I didn't think I could love Chris Haley more...he uses a BASEketball gif.

*shrug* different adaptations hit different ends of the stupid spectrum... starfire is often not the most respectable of female rolemodels (assuming standards of respectability are harbored mostly in the ability to keep one's pants on) http://www.comicvine.com/starfire/29-2389/
September 30 2011 at 6:06 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWell, while she was portrayed as seemingly oblivious to past events that she had been involved in on Earth e.g. serving with the Teen Titans and then the Titans. At the very least, she has forgotten the Titans themselves, seeming not remembering Richad "Dick" Grayson (Robin/Nightwing/Batman), Garfield "Gar" Logan (Beast Boy), Victor "Vic" Stone (Cyborg), Garth (Aqualad/Tempest) and Lilith Clay/Omen. Though it is shown that she has remembered something of Dick Grayson. She is more promiscuous (to an unhealthy degree) than normal. She is also impulsive and dispassionate as well. She seems to hold a degree of anger and bitterness in her as well. She seems quite damaged as a matter of fact.
