@snarktopus - Because this is art, pure and simple. The artist had to acquire a permission from the original copyright holder and that's about it. Personally, I bought several oil paintings which were based off DC characters (Superman and Batman) and they were made with permission from DC. Asked the author, it was one e-mail here, one e-mail back and that was that. He donated the portion of sale to the Child's trust here in Croatia.

I just wish he had clean versions of these.
