In what is surely the comics commentary equivalent of the pride musicians feel when "Weird Al" Yankovic parodies their songs, we're proud to announce that Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik have produced a new Penny Arcade
comic inspired by ComicsAlliance's editorial on the racist outrage to Idris Elba's casting as a Norse god in Marvel Studios' Thor
Further inflating our already massive egos, Holkins and Krahulik also filmed a new episode of Penny Arcade: The Fourth Panel
video series entitled "The Racist Clock
" documenting their humorous discussion about the issue of a black man portraying a traditionally white character, which in many ways parallels the internal discussions we had before going ahead with what was to become our most commented-on piece in the site's history.
Reactions and debate continue to rage in the comments section of the article in question, with many readers pointing out the inherent hypocrisy, racism and general dubiousness of the arguments put forth by the instigating Council of Conservative Citizens and the laughable faux-righteousness of Boycott-Thor.com, a website and Facebook campaign designed to exploit the non-existent and unjustifiable outrage white people probably didn't feel when they watched the awesome Thor trailer last week
We're happy to report that many of our reader comments have been educational in nature. For example, it has been pointed out that there is some anthropological evidence to support a person of African descent portraying a Nordic character. And, as it turns out, there are still practitioners of Ásatrú, a modern evolution of the religious beliefs associated with Thor and the Norse pantheon. As many as 20,000 Germanic Neopagans remain active in North America alone. Unfortunately, apparently all of them read the sentence where we suggested their gods were concocted by drunken medievals. We apologize for any offense to the Odin-faithful -- but please understand, we worship Loki and it's our duty to cause mischief.
