By the time I went to Kenyon in the '90s, a well-ingrained piece of the school's mythology had Watterson painting a replica of the Sistine Chapel on a dorm room ceiling one year, only to have it get painted over. I seriously doubt its veracity, but it made a fun rumor.

As he told it, he spent the entire academic year painting it, and then, a week before graduation, asked for permission to do so. He was told he could paint the replica as long as he painted over it at the end of the year. He did so.

They both started their careers by drawing -brilliant -cartoons for the Kenyon Collegian. (Bill said he was inspired by Jim's work). Truly the Golden Age for cartoonists at this little liberal arts college in Ohio!! "Calvin and Hobbes" and "Zits" are my all-time favorite comics.

I still have those shirts.

Also, Calvin & Hobbes ended 15 years ago, not 10.

A countdown of the must-read books of the year.
