We had a feeling we'd spoken too soon when we labeled James Stokoe's out-of-nowhere release
of 100 amazing unpublished pages from Murderbullets
one of the few remaining "WTF moments" of 2010. Within a matter of hours, our minds have been blown again by a compellingly absurd new Benjamin Marra comic book called The Incredibly Fantastic Adventures of Maureen Dowd: A Work of Satire and Fiction
. As the title and distinctly 1980s alterna-comix-esque artwork suggest, the book is indeed a depiction of the divisive New York Times
columnist as a buxom action heroine with a gun in her garter and a column in her head that will change the world forever.
Cable news junkies and comics fans alike, check after the jump for some plot details and preview pages. The Incredibly Fantastic Adventures of Maureen Dowd
finds the Pulitzer Prize-winner in the midst of the infamous Valerie Plame Affair, where C.I.A. agent Valerie Plame's identity was revealed by columnist Robert Novak as part of an alleged revenge plot by members of former President George W. Bush's inner circle for Plame's husband, former Ambassador Joe Wilson's, role in discrediting the President's premise for going to war with Iraq. In Marra's comic, it falls to Dowd to reveal evidence that the conspiracy is real, but panic sets in when the plucky columnist remembers she has a date with George Clooney and thus little time to write the earth-shattering piece. However, Dowd's hand is forced when a masked intruder steals her laptop and tries to kill her... while she's wearing lingerie.
Given Dowd's penchant for memorably inflammatory nicknames and language -- she often referred to former Vice President Dick Cheney as "Big Time" and has called President Obama "Spock" -- has made her columns a topic of regular discussion on many morning news shows like MSNBC's Morning Joe
, whose irreverent, free-flowing style may allow for Marra's comic to make an appearance.
The book is on sale now at the Traditional Comics website
, but New Yorkers can also purchase copies of The Incredibly Fantastic Adventures of Maureen Dowd
at the Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Fest
