Concept songs are a great way for rappers to show off, and give listeners an escapist treat, but concept albums are a little tougher. The emcee has to maintain a certain tone and role through each song and string disparate records together so they flow from one to the next and build a full, cohesive narrative. Of course, while keeping all of these balls in the air, the emcee's ultimate goal is to just plain keep the listener's attention. It's not easy, which makes lawyer-turned-emcee Adam WarRock and producer Ruckus Roboticus's comic book rap album The War For Infinity all the more impressive. [Obligatory NSFW language warning]
One of the things I love about this album (in my totally uninformed about this genre POV) is that it feels like you could just play 20-30 second loops of each track's beat and be able to get the highs and lows of the story.
I bought this album the day it came out and it's been in heavy rotation ever since. I was a little wary at first, since I'm not a fan of most "nerdcore" but this is excellent hip-hop, without any need for being pigeon-holed or labeled. This is one of my favorite albums of the year, and there's been a lot of good music over the past 11 months.
I'd definitely get the bandcamp deluxe version that comes with the tracklog remix album. So good.
