While Boom! Studios isn't exactly new to mobile comics on digital devices having had certain titles (like "Hexed") available since 2009, the publisher is making significantly more consolidated headway in the digital space today with an all-new branded app for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch via
comiXology.
The app itself is free for download, while its individual comic book issues are priced starting at $1.99 - the same as Denny's Grand Slam breakfasts circa '95. Available titles include "28 Days Later," "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" and Mark Waid's "Irredeemable," with the publisher's entire backlog reportedly in the pipeline for release down the road.
With an interface similar to
Marvel's own comiXology app, Boom! stands out (in part) due to its release schedule, which seems to be much more in line with its print content than many other publishers. There's also an abundance of free #1 half-issues from key series, though no free full issues as of the app's launch.
So far no Disney titles have cropped up on the app, but I expect its something the publisher is working on. "Toy Story 3" is out Friday, after all.
