Not to quibble, but I think you have over simplified Stan's comments a little too much. Your blurb seems to indicate that HE would be confused, but he was referring to the non comic reading public. He comes off incredibly well with his comments and not everyone is going to click through that link:

He started by pointing out instances in Marvel movies where racial switching had been used successfully with less well known (to the non comic fan) characters such as Nick Fury and Kingpin. His point was simply that Spider-Man is a character that is so well known to people who have never even picked up a comic that there might be some cognitive dissonance at play. My sense is that he was trying to indicate that audiences were lacking in their ability to not get hung up on race without coming right out and saying it.
