Christopher Nolan to Lead 'Superman' Reboot!?
It's a bird, it's a plane... it's Warner Bros. asking Christopher Nolan to resurrect their Superman franchise and do something cool with it! According to Deadline Hollywood, Nolan has been asked to come in and sort of "mentor" the next Superman movie, and it won't be a sequel to "Superman Returns," but instead the beginning of a brand new franchise. DH also says Nolan probably won't direct -- especially since David Goyer, Jonah Nolan and Chris Nolan are all busy planning and writing the next "Batman" installment as we speak -- so exactly what he will do isn't clear yet, and DH stresses that the film is still in its real early stages of development (I think they're bringing him in to lay the groundwork for a Justice League movie, but we'll see.)
Still, knowing Nolan is somehow involved in the rebirth of Superman should at the very least breathe some excited life into a franchise that a lot of folks have kinda lost faith in because, let's face it -- the fans feel Warner Bros. had lost faith in it, too. One insider told DH, "We know what we don't want to do. But we don't know what we want to do. We learned a lot from the last movie, and we want to get it right this time." Obviously Nolan has success in rebooting a DC Comics franchise, as evidenced by the work he's done with Batman. But Superman is a different beast all together, and one imagines they'll start with trying to ground the franchise a bit more with a freakier set of villains and perhaps a more relatable, down-to-earth storyline. Not that we need Clark Kent making MySpace references for 120 minutes, but I could see them focusing more on the burden Superman is carrying -- that "weight of the world" angle -- and less on his little romance with Lois Lane.
What do you think? What would you like to see them do with the new Superman?

As one of the lone hardcore comics faithful who enjoyed Bryan Singer's vision, one more nail in the coffin for that version of the franchise makes me sad. That said, if they're going to bury Superman Returns anyway, and if they're going to launch a (potentially ill-advised) JLA franchise anyway, this seems like the guy to do it. My caveats notwithstanding, Nolan seems respectful of source material without being slavish.

hey Aaron, you're not alone in your love for 'Returns. every time i see Supes fly by that airplane window, showing the world he's back, i can't help but grin.
it's not a nail in the coffin. Richard Donner's first 2 flicks are still great, and we still can enjoy Singer's returns. i mean, yeah, it's probably done, but they still exist.

Just hire Grant Morrison and get him to do something like his All-Star Superman. There- I just solved their problem. Grant is as pop-conscious as you get, a great writer, and, I would think, pretty knowledgable about the strengths and weaknesses of most media.

I can't believe how calmly Comic Alliance readers are taking this announcement in comparison to the hysteria at Superherohype over whether Nolan's influence will create a Dark Superman approach ala Dark Knight.Wouldn't it be just too bad if Nolan actually found an approach that not only worked, but actually resonated with the mass audience like his take on Batman did.I don't see it happening, but more power to him or any one who can pull it off.Far too many comic fans seem to want to see the same crap over and over again and want it to stay at a twelve year old level.Perhaps a storyline based on New Krypton would reintroduce the chracter on a big scale without all the extended Superman family nonsense that has been dragging down Superman for years.Don't tell any fans at Superherohype I said this it might upset them too much.

A New Krypton story would somehow avoid the extended Superman family? That's pretty much all New Krypton's been about!

so when is the coming 2013-14. I don't remember the terms of the Siegel lawsuit (and don't really care to look them up either) but there was an apparent date that said it had to be *in production*. Nolan will be exec producing so there's no pressure on him to direct simulatneously with the Dark Knight sequel. And I assure you the 3rd movie in any major film franchise (x3, Spider-Man 3, Batman Forever, Return of the Jedi, etc) might gain still break the box office but it won't be a classic film.

I agree, Supermans history is pretty well documented. Let's get an actual story this time in which the first 1/2 of the movie is not an origin story. Something with Brainiac maybe, or some of the many other villains. If they want to take his powers down a notch then Toyman is a good villain. Something to get out of the tired Origin story. The S is one of the most iconic symbols in the world. This could be something special if they would just remember to include a story in the movie instead of a Michael Bay summer blockbuster with explosions! crashes! smashes! and that sort of stuff.

I'd love to see Brandon back but get rid of Bryan Singer. We don't need his soap opera approach. I enjoyed the FACT that Superman Returned but he's the Champion Asskicker in the DCU/MU and Singer took him and made him a soap star. Fans want to see Superman do what he does better than anybody else, KICK BUTT.
Everyone seems afraid that Nolan will turn Superman dark. That's not what he does. He takes the core of a character and improves him. He made Batman dark because that's what has always made Batman so interesting.
I'm sure Nolan will take the core of Superman, the character, and make him a more relatable character without changing him. Singer had the right idea but took the wrong approach.
People want to see Death of Superman. I say, wait until Superman has FOUGHT a few villains. Keep Luthor but have other villains as well. WIth Superman's rogue's gallery, you need two in the movie to keep him busy.
First:I'd like to see Luthor create Bizarro and Metallo.
Next: I'd love to see Brainiac use Parasite as a pawn.
Introduce other heroes on screen in their movies and have JL go into Death of Superman. DOS isnt cool if you can't have the reaction of other DCU superheroes.
