Loki and Norman Osborn have a chat about the Asgardians and more or less make a play to turn society against them. They make it happen through a bewildered Volstagg who fights common street crime like the overzealous outlander he is before being confronted by super powerful bad guys in the middle of a football game.
Things don't go well, and...

I'm no angry comic nerd, but didn't we see a pretty similar scenario play out just a few years back as the catalyst for the Civil War mega event? Sure, a few details have changed. Loki's manufactured the problem and it's not a serendipitous reality TV disaster. Plus, the "scale" of the carnage seems a bit different, but I still can't shake the feeling that I just watched the same cat walk by a doorway twice. Seriously, why such a similar disaster so close to the last one? Crazy disasters happen every week in comics, so why not try something a little less evocative?
Maybe I'm too quick to point this out. Maybe this is supposed to be evocative. Maybe it's some kind of full-circle thing given the event's tag is "seven years in the making."
I'll reserve full judgment of the "Siege" storyline until its release in January. Oliver Coipel's art is outstanding and I've never really been down on Bendis, but until I've got a little more context, I have to say I'm not feeling this prologue. Don't let us down Bendis!

I'm hoping for the best. We do not need a "Penance" Volstagg.

If you'd read Siege: The Cabal (in which this preview appeared alongside the Dark Avengers Annual), you'd have seen the conversation where Loki specifically recommends to Osborn that they cause an inciting incident because it worked for the superhuman Civil War. So yeah, it's supposed to be evocative.

I guess it's just hard to see Volstagg get played. Socially, he'll never fit in with modern Midgarders, but I feel like he'd be able to avoid such an obvious trap given his warrior background. Haven't hit the comic shop yet today, but that will soon be rectified. Thanks for looking out.

Gee I looked at and thought Starbrand and the destruction of Pittsburgh in the New Universe way back when.

The fact that Bendis admits he got the idea from Millar doesn't make the scene read any less played out or lazy. Honestly, it's nice that he's having the characters admit that he's cribbing plot points from another crossover, but the scene still reads like he just took Civil War #1's script and changed the characters.

I dont see it as civil war 2 or a rip off. loki just used the idea of the world needing an incient to kick off his plan. Its not hero vs hero per sey its more ral heroes vs villians who have pretended to be heroes with asgaurad at the heart of the matter. Its not about choosing a side, that already been done. Its about bringing the whole situation that started in civil war to a head. C'mon guys if you are going to say this has been done then why are you still reading comics? It all the same stuff bad good vs evil, bad guys get smacked down. Thats comics, but its still fun.
