Spider-Man: Better With or Without Mary Jane? (ComicsAlliance)
Jan 3rd 4:23 PM: 'Former' House of Ideas? Sorry, you lose. Marvel's putting out more better comics than any time since the 70s. Iron Fist. Punisher. Punisher War Journal, for God's Sake. Criminal. Captain America (the best it's ever been, storywise and great art), Daredevil (the best it's ever been storywise and some of the best art it's had). Astonishing X-Men. X-Factor. The last year-plus of Hulk. Oh, I don't like the cartoony Mighty Avengers with the gorgeous Cho art, so I'll choose the noirish New Avengers with the gorgeous (though uninked) Yu art. All under Joe Quesada's watch.
And ASM. Love or hate the new plot decision, Straczyinski's been writing it better than it's been written in 35 years.
The 90s Marvel? Don't even make me laugh. That was true crap. 80s Marvel? Minus a handful of ongoing titles like Claremont and Byrne's X-Men and some great minis, you can't even begin to compare it with what the company's putting out right now.
As a former fan of Marvel who's finally reading several titles they put out again, I say thank Jeebus for Joe Quesada.
And considering this is a classic Mephisto plot (which means it will eventually get overturned as the hero comes out victorious, in this case getting his marriage back), I'm more than happy to stick around and see how it turns out before going apoplectic that a spandex-clad funnybook character had his marriage magically erased.
It's like all these fanboys haven't read comics before. ZOMFG, Spider-Man lost his wife to Mephisto and will nevar get her back! NEVAR!! JOE QUESADA IS THE REAL SATAN!!!!!
My one real complaint with Marvel right now...pay for some damned inkers!
Garth Ennis Kills with 'Punisher' and 'JLA/Hitman' (ComicsAlliance)
Oct 11th 10:41 AM: Mmmm, that crow sure tastes good. I finally got around to reading Punisher 50 and 51, and it's unadulterated awesome.

Oct 8th 4:09 PM: I really found Barracuda to be one of his most by-the-numbers books yet. Christopher Walken as mob boss. Pedophile priest. Crazy transvestite friend to prove once again how he's really not alternate-lifestyle-phobic, even though he frequently busts on non-tough-guys who aren't hetero-gendered. It's straight from the standard Ennis recipe book.
Despite all that, I thought it was fun and had great art.

Oct 8th 1:14 PM: Ennis executes The Punisher perfectly. That said, I'm really tired of it. I can only read the same story with the same exact mood so many times. I don't actually think the characterization is getting better...I think it's getting more rote and thus more boring.
As for the Hitman/JLA book, it was a let-down for me. Just plain missing the humor that made Hitman one of my favorites for the bulk of its run. A lot of people might not like Ennis' blatant mischaracterization of DC superhero characters, although that doesn't bother me in the least. Great to see McCrea's art, as always.
I'd love to see Ennis' take a break from comics, because I think he needs a creative recharge. Everything he does these days is really starting to feel like retreads, The Boys included.
This Week's New Releases and Recommendations (ComicsAlliance)
Oct 3rd 4:27 PM: Actually, I've been waiting for Omega since it was announced, and I have to say issue 1 was a disappointment, if snap judgment can be made on a first issue. Nothing new brought to the original story, and not a very good read as a comic. I've been reading everything by Lethem since Gun, With Occasional Music came out and I was so psyched for this. hopefully he'll get more comfortable with the format. Dalrymple's art gorgeous, however.
Howard the Duck, however, was great across the board.
Matt Kindt's Masterful 'Super Spy' Dossier (ComicsAlliance)
Sep 28th 12:58 PM: Somehow I the release of this was blotted from my brain cells (no jokes about that). Cannot wait to get my hands on it, and I can't concur enough as to how good Kindt is. Thanks for the heads up, John.
You Know Comics Have Come a Long Way... (ComicsAlliance)
Sep 28th 12:53 PM: Crappy, dead, grossly expository dialog...check. Ridiculously ill-defined yet can potentially do anything EVAR science that will act as deus ex machina more often than not, thus substituting for the need of intelligent plots...check. Insane characterization of a 23 year old bartender taking care of her abandoned teen sister going gung-ho to work with a secret organization that has almost gotten her killed...check! (BTW, bitches...SARAH CORVUS SAYS HELLO!!!)
All that blew in the series premiere alone, and the guy who's supposed to be the "creative genius" behind it is leaving after the fifth episode. Woot!
Sure, it looks good. But good production values do not a decent show make when everything else sucks. Just look at Heroes.
I have to agree with the whole comic-con/tv point, even if it does come from the Top Cow of newspapers. Far too much utter crap in tv and film now that people of a certain age-bracket will justify as good no matter what just because it's somehow superhero (or other comics) related.
This YouTube Video is More Important Than the Return of 'Heroes'! (ComicsAlliance)
Sep 14th 4:04 PM: Wow, I had seen the original Marvel vs. DC stuff, but didn't realize they'd started an ongoing bit. Some really funny stuff in there. Thanks for the links.
New Releases and Recommendations (ComicsAlliance)
Sep 12th 5:15 PM: And here I thought you guys were going to change the name of the site to Video Games Alliance. Or maybe Video Games Featuring Chicks With Big Racks and Bigger Guns Alliance.
My 2 cents: Buy Thor. It's great fun. Really, really great fun. Looks terrific and Straczynski seems to be at the top of his mythic/superhero game so far. Humor, pathos, gods and Iron Man getting beaten so badly that only Thor's dialog causes more damage.
