Earlier this month, DC Comics announced their upcoming Trinity War storyline. Written by Geoff Johns and Jeff Lemire, the story will show the three Justice League teams facing off against each other, with Phantom Stranger, The Question and Pandora at the center of the conflict. The series will serve as the first big Justice League crossover in the New 52, and with so many characters involved, DC Comics has decided they'll need more space to tell this tale, announcing today that three tie-in stories -- Trinity of Sin: Pandora, Trinity of Sin: Phantom Stranger, and Constantine -- have been added to the schedule. The news was announced today over at IGN, where they interviewed Justice League editor Brian Cunningham, who spoke about the relationship between the teams:

Summer is traditionally the big "summer popcorn extravaganza," and Trinity War definitely qualifies. It's not only the first New 52 meeting of all three Justice League teams, it's the first time we'll see how they all interrelate. And what's really fun is that they don't all get along, as you can probably figure out from that gorgeous Ivan Reis triptych image that everyone's seen by now.

Trinity War will be a crossover between all three Justice League books, written by Johns and Lemire with art by Ivan Reis, Doug Mahnke and Mikel Janin. The story will feature the first New 52 meetings of several characters involved. Though the story officially starts in July, Pandora #1 -- the first issue of a new monthly series starring the mysterious character introduced at the launch of the New 52 (who appeared in the background of every first issue) -- will serve as a prelude of sorts, according to DC. Pandora, along with Phantom Stranger and The Question, will be at the center of the story.

Trinity War begins in Justice League #22.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Parting Shot: This Macbook Keyboard Skin Will Let Your Co-Workers Know You Nerd Hard

I confess I've never looked at the keyboard of my Macbook and thought "I wish this reflected my interest a bit more!" That said, I could see where the appeal is there, and if you're looking for a keyboard that loudly proclaims to the world "I love comics, deal with it," you can't go wrong with the Macbook Superhero Keyboard Skin from Killer Duck Decals, that makes each key a symbol reflecting a comic character, sound effect, or other visual. Some of the choices are obvious (B for Batman), others are inspired (a "BOOM!" sound effect over the delete key), and still others may cause some debate/show obvious preference (Spider-Man chosen over Superman for the S). And for the life of me I can't figure out what the O is, though I look forward to someone commenting here or emailing me with the answer. Yes, that's a request. Please help me.

You can purchase the keyboard skin from the Killer Duck Decals Etsy store.
Inspired by prominent art from Disney's famous Haunted Mansion attraction, artist Abraham Lopez has created "Haunted Arkham Asylum," featuring Batman and other characters in his universe portrayed in "stretch art." The idea is that the images at the top seem perfectly sedate, until they are stretched to reveal a far more sinister situation than previously believed.
For comparison, here is the art from the Haunted Mansion rides that directly inspired Lopez:

While the advent of ComiXology has made several classic comics available to read digitally, the migration of comic strips to the digital world has been comparatively slow. That's now changed, as Universal Uclick's GoComics has launched a free app that enables you to read many classic comic strips on your tablet and phone for free, including Peanuts, Doonesbury, Garfield, The Boondocks and more. But the most notable inclusion may be Calvin and Hobbes, as this marks the first time the entire archive of the legendary strip have been legally available to read on your phone.

Also notable is the absence of The Far Side, as creator Gary Larson remains opposed to the dissemination of his cartoons onto the digital landscape.

Fans of Calvin and Hobbes are no doubt familiar with creator Bill Watterson's well-publicized objections to the commercialization of his work, with very few exceptions. At the moment it's unclear whether or not this decision was made with the cartoonist's blessing. (I've reached out to Andrews McMeel, who own Universal Uclick, for comment, and will update this post if they respond.) By contrast is The Far Side, and as noted by Slate, Larson remains steadfast in his opposition to his strips online availability, saying the following in an online post:

These cartoons are my "children," of sorts, and like a parent, I'm concerned about where they go at night without telling me. And, seeing them at someone's web site is like getting the call at 2:00 a.m. that goes, "Uh, Dad, you're not going to like this much, but guess where I am."

As for the app itself, it not only offers users "20 years of back issues of comic strips," but allows them to bookmark their favorites and share them with friends via email, text, and social media, including Twitter and Facebook. To download the app, you can head to GoComics site.
While many were apprehensive about Man of Steel, the upcoming Superman film directed by Zack Snyder, the trailer released last week has left quite a few previous naysayers somewhere between "cautiously optimistic" and "ridiculously excited." It's also inspired video editor Jason Inman to cut clips from Superman the Animated Series over the new trailer, and you can check out the result after the cut.

Following Patton Oswalt's fully improvised filibuster/rant on Parks and Recreation -- in which he spent nearly eight minutes sharing his pitch for a Star Wars/Marvel film crossover in the next installment in the Star Wars film franchise -- the folks at Entertainment Weekly have created a mash-up poster of all of his suggestions. All of this, of course, means we are now one step closer to this film being made. I mean, Disney once made a movie based on a theme park ride, so really anything can happen.

You can see the full poster below.

The best thing about this, other than the fact that it's based on George Pérez's cover for Infinity Gauntlet #1:

Is the inclusion at the top of the quote from Parks and Rec's Leslie Knope, making the fact that there is not a single female character included on the poster basically perfect.
Some set pictures have already popped up online, and today the studio has released the first poster for the film, with news that a trailer will arrive online Tuesday on iTunes Trailers.
The film features Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Natalie Portman (Jane Foster), Tom Hiddleston (Loki) and Anthony Hopkins (Odin) returning to their roles in the previous film, with Christopher Eccleston joining the cast as Malekith, a character created by Walter Simonson during his much celebrated run on The Mighty Thor.
Out this week is Justice League #19, an issue that officially debuts new members of the team while beginning to lay the groundwork for DC Comics' upcoming Trinity War storyline. As such, it's a significant issue in the series, but more significant is the noticeable change in the credits, one likely pertaining to the ongoing legal battle over the rights to Superman. After the story title and creator and editorial credits, the following bit has been added:"Superman created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, by Special Arrangement with the Jerry Siegel Family"

While Siegel and Shuster's creator credits have been in place consistently since the 1970s, the reference to Siegel's family was not in any previous issue of Justice League, nor in any previous Superman-starring comic books, to this point. Its appearance in the credits of this issue stands out even more than it otherwise would, given the timing of its arrival: Justice League #19 debuted in stores and online the day before the 75th Anniversary of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's Action Comics #1.

When contacted, DC Comics had no comment.

UPDATE: The new credit appears to be a condition of a 2001 document a federal judge has determined to be legally binding, which obliges DC Comics to use the language in any and all Superman related issues going forward.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Robert Morales, Writer Of Marvel's 'Truth: Red, White And Black,' Passes Away

Robert Morales, whose writing on the Marvel Comics miniseries Truth: Red, White and Black represents a seminal moment in the complicated history of race and comics, has passed away. The somber news was broken online by legendary sci-fi writer Samuel Delany, who was close to Morales. Delany went to Facebook to offer a few touching words on the loss of his friend.

From Delany's post:

"Robert Morales was one of my closest friends-and had been since he was seventeen year old. He died at his home in Brooklyn this morning, leaving his father and mother. He was fifty-four. We spoke on the phone for many years, at least once a week and often more. I am shattered. His many friends will miss him deeply. He had agreed to be my literary executor, and the idea that he would pre-descease me never entered my head. For me and many others he was an indispensable friend. To say he will be deeply missed is an incredible understatement."

Along with artist Kyle Baker, Morales' Truth expanded upon the story of the super soldier serum that turned Steve Rogers into Captain America. Inspired by the events of the infamous Tuskegee Experiments, Morales and Baker tell a tale of black soldiers in the U.S. Army during World War 2, who are forced to act as test subjects in a military program attempting to perfect the serum eventually administered to Rogers. The results were largely disastrous, leading to painful mutation and death, and leaving a young soldier by the name of Isiah Bradley as the sole survivor.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly in 2002, Morales described the process of pitching the story to Marvel, saying: "I wrote a proposal that was so staggeringly depressing I was certain they'd turn it down. But they didn't."

On a personal note, Truth is a comic that continues to mean a great deal to me. It's a story whose existence is not only welcome, but was achingly necessary. As a fan who at times feels unwanted or unwelcome in an industry I love, this book remains significant. It was a comic I could show my mother when she questioned, perhaps rightfully, why I cared so much about an industry that often seems to care so little about me.

Robert Morales was 54 years old.

Parks and Recreation, a show about politics in a small U.S. town, often finds clever ways to parody various topical issues taking place in Washington D.C. Tomorrow's episode is no different, as this time they're taking a shot at much debated filibuster reform, and they've enlisted the help of Patton Oswalt to do so. Oswalt, playing the role of one of Pawnee's many <strike>insane</strike> passionate citizens, goes on a completely improvised nerd rant in which he recites what he believes should be the plot of the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII, including an aging Luke, Han and Leia crossing over into the Marvel film universe as they team up with the Avengers, Spider-Man, the X-Men and more to take on Thanos. Not all of the Avengers make it into Oswalt's cut, as he's replaced "second tier" characters Hawkeye and Black Widow with noted Marvel A-lister Moon Knight. Naturally.
The nominees for the 2013 Eisner Awards were announced this afternoon, and it is a varied and impressive list. In terms of publishers, Fantagraphics leads the pack with a robust 24 nominations, followed by Image Comics with 17 (and one shared) and IDW with eight (also with one shared.) Close behind is Pantheon with eight, including five for Chris Ware's Building Stories and three for Charles Burns' The Hive. Marvel has seven nominations, the majority being for Matt Fraction and David Aja's Hawkeye, while Dark Horse pulled in six nominations. Notably, no mainline DC Comics title received a nomination, save for J.H. Williams III getting a nod for his covers on Batwoman.

As expected, critically acclaimed titles like Building Stories, Hawkeye, and Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' Fatale are well represented with five nominations each. Close behind are BOOM!/kaboom's Adventure Time series and Monkeybrain's online comic Bandette by Paul Tobin and Colleen Coover, each with four nominations.

Also, I'm both pleased and honored to say that ComicsAlliance is among the nominees for Best Comics-Related Periodical/Journalism, alongside four other incredibly worthy candidates. I'd like to extend congratulations and sincere thanks to the entire staff of ComicsAlliance, including my good friend and former CA Editor-in-Chief Laura Hudson. And on behalf of everyone at CA, a huge thank you to this year's judges, and the numerous industry professionals who have offered words of advice, praise and/or encouragement.
Celebrated comedian and actor Jonathan Winters passed away last week at the age of 87. The extremely popular and versatile performer was perhaps best known for his role in the television series Mork and Mindy and the comedy film classic It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. For the latter, Winters released a comedy album in concert with the movie, with album cover art by legendary MAD and EC cartoonist Jack Davis, who used the opportunity to display some of the many different eccentric characters Winters portrayed throughout his career.

You can see the full cover below.
Davis was an easy selection as the illustrator for the album's cover, as he also created the art for the promotional poster for the film. Throughout a career that has spanned nearly eight decades, Davis also created album cover art for Homer and Jethro and Johnny Cash, among others.

As for Winters, this isn't his only connection to the world of comics: He played Wainwright Barth in The Shadow, the 1994 film adaption of Walter B. Gibson's legendary pulp hero.

Following the success of the Avengers film, and with Iron Man 3 set to hit theaters next month, the characters who make up Marvels Avengers team are more recognizable than ever. Naturally, the publisher is taking advantage of that fact via merchandise, including the two t-shirts pictured above.

Of course, aside from the cut of the shirts, the second you look at them you instantly know which is meant for boys and which is for girls, and therein lies quite a problem.Marvel had no comment when asked, but these shirts were seemingly both licensed out to a manufacturer -- which is to say, not produced by Marvel-- and there's an excellent chance that their creation was not directly overseen by anyone in the Marvel offices. That's simply the nature of licensing: the content owner at times does not closely review every licensed product. Further, I've not been able to ascertain who made both shirts (the Iron Man tee was made by Mighty Fine). It's possible they were manufactured by two different companies, meaning this could really just be a case of one middle man making a perfectly acceptable shirt while another did not.

All that said, it's not a wholesale excuse. These are Marvel's characters, the foundation of their company. As such, these products represent them, not the manufacturers. When people see this, and are (rightfully) bothered by it, they aren't going to care what middle man made the shirts. They're going to instantly direct their ire toward Marvel, as it it will look to them as if Marvel is telling boys they can be heroes, and telling girls that, if they're lucky, a hero will come save them.

Marvel, and most licensors in general, need to play a larger role in what people are doing with their intellectual properties. Because on the surface, this is just one more superhero product that tells girls to find their heroes elsewhere, instead of being heroes themselves.

Premiering on Cartoon Network later this month is Teen Titans Go!, the new series that is both aesthetically and tonally inspired by the network's earlier Teen Titans cartoon. As such, in a nice nod to the previous series, today Cartoon Network debuted the theme song to Teen Titans Go!, a remix of the original show's opening music created by the legendary DJ Mix Master Mike.By nearly any measure, Mix Master Mike is one of the greatest DJs in the history of hip hop, perhaps best known for collaborating on three of the last four Beastie Boys albums: Hello Nasty, To The Five Boroughs, and Hot Sauce Committee Part Two. He's also the perfect choice for this new version of the opening, which you can check out for yourself over at the Complex website.
In stores tomorrow is Harbinger #11, the first issue of a new arc running throughout the duration of Valiant's Harbinger Wars. Written by Joshua Dysart and with art from Khari Evans and Trevor Hairsine, Harbinger has been the flagship title of Valiant's 2012 relaunch, and has been met with much critical praise. While the issue is part of a huge crossover for the publisher, the arc this storyline starts is completely self-contained, and can be read on its own. As such, Valiant is billing this issue as a jumping on point for new readers who are curious about the series.

The issue, featuring the return of original series artist Evans, focuses on series lead Peter Stancheck and the Renegades dealing with the recent revelation that a ruthless harbinger hunter named Bloodshot is on their trail. It's a stressful situation, so what better time for the kids to drop in a bar and discover that one of them is not very good at holding their liquor?

Valiant Comics has provided ComicsAlliance with a six page preview of Harbinger #11, along with the main cover from Evans and variant covers from Hairsine and Patrick Zircher, which you can check out after the cut!

Shooting has now begun on Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and the studio has released the first photo from the set, seen above. With production underway, Marvel Entertainment has announced the final cast for the film, including Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson reprising their roles, and confirming a previously reported role for legendary actor Robert Redford.Spinning out of the events of Captain America: The First Avenger and Marvel's The Avengers, the new film, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo from a script written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (the duo who wrote the screenplays for the first Captain America film and the upcoming Thor: The Dark World), the film features a major role for the Black Widow as she teams with Cap to "to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, DC". The film will also feature Redford as senior S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Alexander Pierce, a seldom used character from the Marvel universe who will likely serve a very different role in the film. Created by Bob Harras and Paul Neary, this is actually Pierce's second appearance in a Marvel film -- he was previously featured in the TV film Nick Fury: Agent of Shield, starring David Hasselhoff.

Aside from the main trio of Evans, Johansson and Jackson, other actors reprising their turns in previous Marvel films include Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Toby Jones as Arnim Zola and Maximiliano Hernández as Agent Jasper Sitwell. Newcomers to the Marvel film universe include Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon, Frank Grillo as Brock Rumlow, Georges St-Pierre as Georges Batroc (a.k.a. Batroc The Leaper), and Emily VanCamp as Agent 13.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier arrives in theaters April 4, 2014.
Last month Dynamite Entertainment announced a relaunch of Red Sonja, with the new monthly series to be written by Gail Simone. The publisher also revealed plans to have the series' covers be created by a rotating cast of women artists. Today, Dynamite released all six covers for Red Sonja #1, including work from Fiona Staples, Amanda Conner, Colleen Doran, Nicola Scott, Stephanie Buscema, and Jenny Frison, and you can seem them all after the cut.Simone spoke about reaching out to each artist

"I had this idea to ask the top female artists in the industry to do the covers and Dynamite ran with it beyond my dreams. Not only did all the artists we asked immediately agree, they all confessed their secret love for Sonja. They adore her! Lots of the artists submitted multiple sketches because they couldn't stop, and many top names submitted sketches without even being asked, they love Sonja so much, and are dying to see this project."

This weekend ABC announced that Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D, the upcoming television series spinning out of Marvel Entertainment's highly successful movie universe, is getting a new name. The Joss Whedon helmed vehicle will now be titled Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., a title that perhaps better reflects what is expected to be a focus on the characters in the series, including Agent Coulson, who seemingly died during last summer's The Avengers film. From the newly released synopsis for the series:

Fresh from his role in the summer's box office smash, Marvel's The Avengers, Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) returns to the worldwide law enforcement organization S.H.I.E.L.D. He puts together a small, highly trained, team of Agents to tackle the cases that haven't been classified yet, the new, the strange and the unknown. That team consists of straight arrow Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), an expert in combat and espionage; pilot and martial artist Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen); and brilliant if socially awkward scientists Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge). They'll be joined by civilian new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet).

"Prepare for an epic adventure that showcases the hope and wonder of the human spirit. This is a world of Super Heroes, aliens and the unusual - of action, spectacle and world spanning stories. The show will speak to the human condition through the lens of our very human, non-powered S.H.I.E.L.D agents - that together we are greater than we are apart, and that we can make a difference in the world."

The upcoming series, with an as-yet unannounced premiere date, will be Executive Produced and co-written by the team of Joss and Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen, Jeffrey Bell and Jeph Loeb.

Carmine Infantino, the legendary comic book creator who played an integral role in the American comic book business both as an artist and editor, passed away today. Regarded by many as one of the greatest pencillers the industry has ever known, he is perhaps most associated with his work in revitalizing the DC Comics character The Flash, a move that signaled a return of popularity for superheroes and ushered in what is fondly referred to even today as the Silver Age of American comics.Infantino was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1925. As a freshman in high school, he was hired by Harry Chesler, whose studio included members Jack Cole, Jack and Otto Binder, Mort Meskin and others. Infantino would go on to work for many publishers before arriving at DC Comics in 1947. His first published work for DC was a short story in which he and writer Robert Kanigher created the original Black Canary.

During the early 1950s, Infantino mostly worked on Western, mystery and science fiction comics for DC, as the popularity of superheroes had declined following the aftermath of the Senate hearings resulting from Frederic Wertham's Seductin of the Innocent. Then, in 1956, DC Comics editor Julius Schwartz would task Kanigher and Infantino with revitalizing superheroes by updating the Flash.

This new version of the character debuted in Showcase #4, with a new backstory, secret identity (Barry Allen instead of Jay Garrick) and groundbreaking design created by Infantino. The success of this debut led to the rebirth of superhero comics. Five years later, Infantino would illustrate the "Flash of Two Worlds," a landmark story in the pages of Flash #123, marking the first meeting of the Silver and Golden Age era Flashes and, more significantly, introduced Earth Two and the concept of the Multiverse to DC Comics. The success of "Flash of Two Worlds" would lead to DC revamping many of it's other Golden Age characters who'd been dormant for years.

Infantino would go on to co-create other notable characters for DC, including Elongated Man, Deadman and of course Barbara Gordon/Batgirl in the pages of Detective Comics #359, a story titled "The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl!"

In 1967, Infantino was promoted to Art Director of DC Comics, and later Editorial Director, where his impact was immediate and profound. In his new role, he employed a strategy of hiring artists as editors, first bringing Charlton Comics artist Dick Giordano to DC, who would later become the publisher's Executive Editor. Infantino also made artists Joe Orlando, Mike Sekowsky and Joe Kubert editors. Under Infantino's stewardship, creators Neal Adams and Denny O'Neill were brought into the fold, and that duo would go on to create definitive reinterpretations of characters like Batman, Green Lantern and Green Arrow. In 1970, Infantino signed Jack Kirby to a contract with DC Comics, which led to the creation of Kirby's enduringly popular Fourth World saga, as well as later creations including The Demon, Kamandi, and others. The following year, Infantino was promoted to publisher of DC Comics, a title he would hold until 1976 when he was replaced by Jenette Kahn.

Infantino returned to freelance work, which led to him drawing for other publishers like Marvel Comics, where he worked on the company's monthly Star Wars and Spider-Woman series, among others. He would eventually return to DC and The Flash in 1981, where he was again made the regular artist for that series until its cancellation four years later. Infantino would go on to pencil other various projects before eventually becoming a teacher at the School of Visual Arts in New York, where he remained until his retirement.

Infantino's work as an artist, editor, teacher and mentor spanned nearly six decades, and his contribution to the medium during that time is very arguably unmatched. As an artist, Infantino drew hundreds of stories in his career, and as an editor he brought creators under the auspices of DC Comics who would go on to change the publisher, and the industry, forever. His impact will be felt as long as this business and community endures.
DC's top executives released these statements to the company's The Source blog:

DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson: "The entire DC Entertainment family is saddened by the loss of Carmine Infantino. His contributions to the comics industry and to DC Comics in particular are immense and impossible to quantify. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and fans during this difficult time."

DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Jim Lee: "Carmine was a legend. The number of classic covers he created are innumerable. His influence, reach and impact is humbling and will always live on."

DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Dan DiDio: "There are few people in this world that have had as much of an impact on the industry as Carmine. He bridged both the Golden and Silver Ages of comics, shepherding in some of the most successful periods in our history and setting the course of our characters that is still seen today. He will be greatly missed, but his legacy will remain forever."
