It looks like fans finally have a human face to place with Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt's cursed comic book weapon. Laura Ramsey (The Ruins
) has officially been cast as Becky Montcrief, the female lead in NBC's upcoming TV pilot based on The Sixth Gun
, Oni Press's supernatural western comic created by Bunn and Hurtt.
Ramsey joins some other recent casting additions, including W. Earl Brown (Deadwood
) as the main antagonist General Hume, Graham McTavish (The Hobbit
) as his evil lieutenant, and Aldis Hodge (Leverage
) as Agent Mercer, a PI looking for the eponymous gun.The Sixth Gun
follows the story of Becky Montcrief, who acquires one of six uniquely cursed guns and must then fight alongside a roguish gunslinger Drake Sinclair against the undead Confederate General Hume who seeks the weapons to destroy the world.
Beyond the upcoming NBC pilot, the comic's had quite a bit of success of late. In addition to its 29 and counting ongoing issues, The Sixth Gun's garnered a spin-off written by Bunn and Hurtt and featuring art by Brian Churilla, The Sixth Gun: Sons of the Gun
, which spotlights previous owners of the magical pistols.
While the recent casting announcements have locked in a significant portion of the cast, the actors playing male co-protagonist, Drake Sinclair, and the female antagonist, and General Hume's wife, Missy Hume, remain to be announced.
Initially announced last month
, the pilot is set to be directed by Jefferey Reiner (Friday Night Lights
) and written by Carlton Cuse (Lost
) and Ryan Condal. It's currently planned for 2013/2014, but as demonstrated by the Locke and Key
pilots, a show's fate is never certain at this stage.
In the meantime, interested readers can find the comic at your local comic shop, through Comixology
