How's the pie?
NOT SO GOOD
I think he was right that they didn't stray too far from what was already done in the Raimi movies. I will say I thought Amazing was better than the old Spider-mans because of Spider-man 3. I felt like that one was so horrible that it sent ripples of suck back in time to taint the previous movies.
January 28 2013 at 11:57 AM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyI may perhaps think less of the Raimi movies because of that one. 2 just set such a high bar in terms of comic book movie sequels that 3 was likely to be a letdown, but Raimi just blew it.
January 28 2013 at 12:22 PM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyYour either forgetting or too young to care about the conflicts circling around 3's production. Raimi said at one time he never liked venom and sometime later rumors started flying that Avi Arad and producers were really pushing venom. Sony became much more involved with spidey after these big successes trying use story to justify merchandising like venom and hover-goblin and it really showed
The 4th unmade movie started out with the same sort of rumors about conflicts between Raimi and producers and luckily scrapped
First, I'm 44, so hardly too young to remember, and second, problems behind the production are commonplace in Hollywood. That doesn't mean a movie is destined to be terrible. We can blame Avi Arad, or we can blame the guy who was actually writing and directing the thing.
Spider-Man 3 was bad. Franco (again, in my opinion) was bad. The movie made the most money out of the three, but I only saw it once in theaters, and never watch it otherwise. I admit my opinion is a very small minority here.
He was the worst thing about the original trilogy (besides Kirsten Dunst), so I'm not sure why his opinion really matters. But, okay.
January 27 2013 at 1:55 PM Report abuse Permalink -3 rate up rate down ReplyHis opinion matters because he was part of it - he knows better than most people what goes into a Spider-Man movie.
January 27 2013 at 2:02 PM Report abuse Permalink +2 rate up rate down ReplyI realize no one likes Amazing Spider-Man here (understandable as there were parts I had big problems with, too), but this elevation of the Raimi movies borders on revisionism. I loved Spider-Man 2, but much of it doesn't hold up well, 11 years later. And Franco might "know what goes into a Spider-Man movie," but not based on his own input. His performance as Harry Osborn was a prime example of how NOT to play the character. He was terrible, in my opinion.
January 28 2013 at 12:21 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate downAmazing Spider-man ELEVATES Raimi Spider-man by being 'not quite as good'. People STILL complain about Raimi Spider-man... the problem is the reboot doesn't really do very much to improve or be better than Raimi's. Its not horrible, but its not really any better.
One dog leaves a little dry turd in your hand and another dog leaves a huge wet turd in your other hand... as much as you still don't like the little turd, it still beats the big nasty wet one.
Wow, a good comment and a bad comment. That doesn't happen very much.
January 28 2013 at 6:00 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhat is worse, a construction worker organizing a number of super super weirdly placed cranes to turn facing one road or spidey unmasking himself in front of people for no reason to stop a train and then body surfing across them?
January 26 2013 at 5:33 PM Report abuse Permalink -1 rate up rate down ReplyThe crane thing. That's worse.
I know you're trying to draw a comparison that both series made mistakes (and they did). Peter unmasking in SM2 because he couldn't see was actually good, and it was a life-or-death situation. I agree the body surfing thing right after was too much (Raimi had that cheesy moment in each film, as well as other negatives).
For a good, albeit long-winded explanation on why Amazing isn't a very good movie read Film Critic Hulk's essay about it.

I really didn't like Amazing but to be honest I found Raimi's way too schmatlzy too. Neither series has the right amount of FUN that I would expect from a spider-man movie, they are both too bogged down in Peter being a sad sack instead of a fun, charismatic dork.
January 27 2013 at 1:30 AM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate downAmazing Spider-Man was fine. I liked it better than, say, Iron Man.
January 26 2013 at 4:43 PM Report abuse Permalink -8 rate up rate down ReplyI often thought "Man, how good would a Raimi-directed Spidey film with Garfield instead of Maguire have been?" when I was watching ASM.
January 26 2013 at 1:39 PM Report abuse Permalink +6 rate up rate down ReplyI can get behind that idea, if we add in the fight choreography of Amazing. The school scene was even better than the el-train.
January 28 2013 at 9:08 AM Report abuse Permalink +2 rate up rate down ReplyMy main complaint with "The Amazing Spider-Man" was that pre-Spidey Peter Parker just didn't seem awkward enough. I mean, he was approaching Marty McFly levels of skateboard skills in the movie. The Parker I know would've never been able to do that. Plus, if there had been somebody in a subway car doing all the things Parker did, you'd have cell phone video of it all over YouTube. So much for a secret identity! Finally, other than fixing the mechanical vs. organic webshooter issue, there wasn't really any reason to spend that much time rehashing the origin. Take 10-15 minutes, recap the origin, and move on. (Even better, just do the origin recap during the opening credits.)
January 26 2013 at 12:33 PM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyMeanwhile, Tobey was still pretty wimpy after getting his powers. The original Peter Parker was anti-social and nerdy, but wasn't so unbearably doe-eyed.
The unmasked shenanigans were definitely the worst part, but I would have liked Franco to say "not enough Harry."
My main complaint with Maguire is that he never stopped crying.
January 26 2013 at 1:39 PM Report abuse Permalink +3 rate up rate down ReplyI didn't like Amazing. I didn't like Raimi's films much either.
But I still don't really know why James Franco is someone whose opinion matters in anything.
What, being an actor in the previous three Spider-Man movies isn't enough for you?
January 26 2013 at 9:31 AM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyI enjoyed Raimis filmed better...they were just more fun.
Amazing did have its moments though.
dont anybody care about what this weed head has to say. and I like the Amazing Spider-man way better then the Raimi films but with saying that I still do think the1st 2 Raimi films was meh to ok and the Amazing Spider-man movie couldn't have been made if it wasn't for the 1st 2 spider-man films. but yea still Amazing Spider-man was way better.
