As everyone who's seen Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy knows, Alfred is the steady moral center of the series. But how did he end up that way? In an interview to promote the Blu-ray and DVD release of The Dark Knight Rises, Michael Caine revealed the previously unknown background he invented for the character in order to portray him properly.
According to Caine's backstory - which, interestingly enough, isn't a million miles away from the backstory Geoff Johns created for the character in the Batman: Earth One graphic novel - Alfred was an injured SAS soldier who met Bruce Wayne's father while recovering:
