Worried that the animated adaptation of Frank Miller's classic Batman: The Dark Knight Returns might dampen down the violence and menace of the original? Here's a clip from Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Pt. 1 to assuage your concerns, with bone-cracking sound effects to make longtime fans feel right at home. Shame the criminal in question couldn't say the same.
As you've heard in this (and previous) clips, Batman's played by RoboCop himself, Peter Weller. The rest of the cast includes Michael McKean, Modern Family's Ariel Winter and a little hint of Lost's Michael Emerson as the Joker.
I don't care if it's the voice of Robo Cop. Robo Cop sucked and you all know it. This voice doesn't fit very well. They should have gone with Michael Ironside or Kevin Conroy. I'm tired of these special guest voice actors who have crappy read after crappy read. (The OC guy voicing Batman in Year One) Geek cred only gets you so far in my book. If you ruin a movie that I've been looking forward to because you don't really get the character or don't want to be there, that pisses me off. Get out of my movie.
Kevin Conroy can't be Batman forever. You might have to accept the fact that different people are going to be cast as a voice actor the same way a physical actor is cast. I will hold off judgement of Weller until I can see it in full. I may enjoy his performance I won't know until I can see it all. That is the way it should be judged as a whole piece, not off of 2 lines of dialog.
My opinion was based on the several clips of Weller's role as Batman. He gives us a cardboard performance, as we come to expect from these guest star actors. You need professional voice actors like Steven Blum, John DiMaggio, Grey DeLisle, etc. who know what they are doing behind the mic. Otherwise we end up with these videos that have amazing animation and sub par performances.
Mickey Rourke would've given you the same souless read. You need actual voice-over actors that know what the hell they're doing, in order to get a satisfactory movie. There have been a few exceptions to that rule though. Brian Cranston rocked his performance as Jim Gordon.
