Actually, he ghosted the AMERICAN comic strip Davy Crockett, Frontiersman and then it was reprinted in France.

(A strip about Davy Crockett originating in France doesn't really make very much sense, does it?)

Actually, the French were nuts for cowboy/western comics, which of course would have to be set in America, for a pretty long stretch there. There was an incredibly popular cowboy strip called "Blueberry" (which Jean "Mobius" Giraud worked on, if I'm not mistaken), and the cartoon "Lucky Luke", among others, all originating in France.

So a French Davy Crockett strip is not only likely, it probably exists. I mean, there's no particular reason an American couldn't do a strip about Napoleon or Jules Verne, right? They're important historical figures.

Yeap! I got some Blueberry volumes myself! :)

Other countries also had comics related to the American West. It seems like other countries are more enamored with the "legend of the cowboy" than the U.S. has been in the last decade or two.

Lucky Luke was a comic before it was a cartoon. I have English volumes of both Lucky Luke and Lieutenant Blueberry, and they're great. Also recommended: Asterix, Tintin, and anything by Spanish cartoonist F. Ibanez, such as Mortadello y Filemon, El Botones Sacarino, and Pepe Gotero y Otilio.
