Apparently, you really can't keep a Main Man down. Not only is DC Comics' favorite intergalactic bastich Lobo making his New 52 debut in upcoming issues of Deathstroke, but now news comes that his long-in-development movie is back on, with director Brad Peyton set to handle the creative chores.
Deadline broke the news this weekend that Peyton, who scored an unexpected hit with this year's Journey 2: The Mysterious Island after a career that has included Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore and the short-lived TV series What It's Like Being Alone, has been hired by Warner Bros. and producers Joel Silver and Akiva Goldsman to not only direct but also re-write the existing script for the project.
Lobo's movie career has been trying to get off the launchpad for some time. Before Peyton, Sherlock Holmes director Guy Richie was attached to a potential movie adaptation between 2009 and 2010, the second time Warners had thought about bringing the character to the big screen (At one point, he was part of an aborted Superman movie revival). Before that, ILM visual effects director Scott Leberecht had adapted the classic 1991 one-shot The Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special by Keith Giffen, Alan Grant and Simon Bisley as part of the 2002 American Film Institute's director studies program, proving just how far a $2,400 budget, talent and good source material can stretch (Clue: Pretty far). If Peyton needs some inspiration before starting work, he could always check this NSFW movie out:
After the relative failure of projects like Green Lantern, Jonah Hex and Constantine, DC's track record at the box office is looking pretty grim, especially compared with Marvel's Iron Man/Thor/Captain America run. Will Lobo be the movie to break Warners' bad luck with non-Batman DC movies? Not to mention, will it find itself existing in the same cinematic universe as next year's Man of Steel?
