As we head towards Valentine's Day, ComicsAlliance is offering up a daily tribute to love, as depicted in the somewhat dubious world of Romance Comics!
Today's entry: Our Love Story
#28's "Alone in the Dark!"
Fortunately for all concerned, "Alone in the Dark
" has nothing to do with the video game series of the same name or its 2005 Uwe Boll/Tara Reid adaptation. Instead, Holli Resnicoff
and Alan Weiss
tell the story of young Lisa, who may be the only person in the history of the Marvel universe to be struck blind without immediately getting into a conflict the Kingpin or being kidnapped by Deadpool.
Which isn't to say her life's easy: Her parents decide to cheer her up by taking her on a vacation, because that's what you want to do with someone who was just recently blinded: Put them in a completely unfamiliar location! Needless to say, she (quite literally) bumps into the unnecessarily handsome Arthur and they have a summer fling that thrives despite Lisa's original insistence that she can't swim because she's blind!
Because, you know, swimming is a very sight-intensive activity. I know that when I hit the pool, I always make sure to keep my eyes open at all times.
Anyway, they fall in love, which is only more crushing when vacation ends and they have to part. But it does give Lisa the confidence to enroll in a school for the blind, where the laws of romance comic coincidence come together and she runs into Arthur again. Because he's her teacher.
Love is blind, everybody. And occasionally kind of creepy.
