Cartoonist Kate Beaton
is best known for her Hark! A Vagrant
webcomics poking fun at the absurdity of history, and while her style has gotten more refined over the years, some of our earliest favorites were her "younger self" comics where she tried to explain her adult life -- and her evolution into a professional illustrator -- to herself as a child. The final panel of the above cartoon is particularly interesting to reflect on four years later, when the self-effacing Beaton has not only illustrated cartoons for The New Yorker
, but recently released a lovely Hark! A Vagrant hardcover collection through Drawn and Quarterly
. There's a PDF preview of the book here
, and you can buy it here
, which you totally should.
