More leaked in-game footage from THQ's canned Avengers title has hit the web, and it's chock full of Skrull-killing action. It's much more complete than previously seen footage and stills and actually seems to demonstrate the supposed would-have-been game's playability. Interestingly, it reveals a mix of first and third person gameplay perspectives plus number of famous comic book locations that might be part of Joss Whedon's 2012 film, that is, if this game was intended to be a proper tie-in. Its heavily comics-influenced style and other factors seem to suggest otherwise (especially given the inclusion of certain Skrull forms in this new footage), but stranger games have happened.
The video's "Work In Progress -- Art Not Final" disclaimer at the bottom of the screen is a clear indication that the game wasn't far out of the gate, but I have to say, whatever its intended purpose, it looks like it could've been a lot of fun.
Scope out the potentially spoilery footage after the jump.
Update: The YouTube video has been removed, but you can still catch the footage at 1up.
Wow! I'd probably buy that game (though, I'd wait for reviews). I suspect the actual movie tie-in that does get released will be less interesting. That level of violence isn't completely necessary for a fun game, but it sure would be nice.
Wonder if they ran into licensing issues with the fantastic four super skrull and the x-men super skrull. It is seriously weird that the Skrulls are going to be villians in the avengers when marvel studios doesnt own the rights to fantastic four movies. Skrulls without super skrulls with fantistic four powerset just feels wrong.
I really wonder how this got released because the previous pictures of the game just looked OK, but this looks pretty good. An interesting twist on these games especially when I thought it would just be another Ultimate Alliance type of game.
Sucks the game was cancelled but I wonder if THQ still has the rights to the Avengers. Would really like to see this game develop into something.
One thing that was interesting was they showed multiple Hulks which looks to me like it had online multiplayer. Very cool, sucks it is dead. I wonder if it is possible that Activision killed this project because of licensing issues?
so no one has noticed that all the Marvel movie versions of characters lately have looked much more like their Ultimate versions? (Samuel Jackson Nick Fury? anyone?)
I believe most of us have noticed (though personally I always seen Ultimate Nick Fury played by Avery Brooks). Marvel seems to have taken some ques from their Ultimate line in making the characters a bit more modern while making sure they stayed true to the Original Marvel Universe.
well...that's a little odd considering how blatantly Samuel Jackson he was drawn, to the point where they even made sure to mention he wanted to be played by Samuel Jackson in a movie of them in the series.
but anyway, no I don't think most have noticed if there continue to be so many "is this an Ultimates game?" comments.
Looked pretty sweet! Some games I don't like as FPS but this would of caught my eye if there was a option to switch into 3rd person. Shame it got scrapped. Only reasoning I can think of is maybe possibly the designers didnt realize that the "Secret Invasion" storyline happened in the Original Marvel Universe and not the Ultimate Universe? But it was already to far along so they just scrapped it. :/ shame would of been a fun game with the multiplayer.
Wow I'm kinda loving the concept and the set up, and it looks like if they continued, it'd have way more polish, and some decent FPS/RPG hybrid mechanics, but I think its too violent from this footage, and really, the fact that it got cancelled worries me.
Mostly because now I assume we're gonna get a really crappy Marvel Ultimate Alliance tie-in game.
