Between the inclusion of the Riddler and Penguin, Batman: Arkham City's been getting loads of new villains reveals lately, but anti-hero Catwoman trumps them all as a full-on playable character. Rocksteady Studios marketing game manager Dax Ginn gave Gamespot the inside scoop on Selina Kyle's newly-announced playable status, explaining that she's substantially more than a simple Batman re-skin, acting as an independent gaming experience with an all-new fighting and upgrade systems. What's more, Catwoman's story will intertwine with Batman's, fleshing out the game for further hours of gameplay.
As a capeless criminal/crimefighter, Catwoman will rely on a grappling hook and her patented claws to navigate Akrham City's massive environments. Fighting also looks pretty purrrrrfect as Catwoman's acrobatic moves are shown coupled with a whip, bolas and other goodies. I'm not sure how (or if) Catwoman will replicate Batman's "detective mode," but maybe that's what those huge goggles of hers are for?
Complaints about the gratuity aside, I have a geek complaint to add:
Why is Catwoman just as good - if not better - at martial arts as Batman in this game? It's not just a fannish complaint - it would make a great gameplay dynamic if she weren't. If her strengths lay mostly in stealth, setting straps, and sneak-takedowns, meaning you'd have to avoid hand-to-hand combat.
She was trained by the Armless Master in martial arts and by Wildcat in boxing and street-fighting. She is a dangerous, clever and resourceful fighter, known for precise, agile attacks and speedy getaways. Her formidable hand-to-hand combat skills are augmented by her cat-like speed, reflexes, balance, and flexibility. Catwoman nas also mastered Dragon Style Kung Fu and Karate. Her skills are good enough to where she has fought off Batman, wounded him, and occasionally defeated him (more than once).
Well, I stand corrected on the fannish front. But I do think it's weird that it seems like she'll be just as proficient as Batman in all physical aspects (I mean, assuming those crazy kicks and takedowns are actual gameplay moves, as they're made to look like) but with even more skills. I guess gadgets and gliding will be what separate them.
I love how Rocksteady is working her into the game. While Batman is trying to get things back under control, she's out stealing things from the different factions.
While I'm not crazy about the ears on her suit; this should have been the costume used for the movie (as if that last thought hasn't been post to every comic site that covers the DCU).
