As Matthew Inman explains in a step-by-step webcomic at The Oatmeal, this can happen very gradually in web design, as clients slowly insinuate themselves further and further into the process until they are basically designing the product themselves, creating horrible web Frankensteins out of your original design that fill you with shame and regret. While I have never known this exact pain, the comic certainly makes me feel it.
