Press Release
Six months after the death of Steve Rogers captured national attention, Marvel is proud to unveil the new Captain America as designed by renowned, award winning artist Alex Ross! This bold new look, seen here for the first time, also serves as the variant cover to January's Captain America #34, featuring the first appearance of this new Captain America! After the death of Steve Rogers, and the climactic events of Captain America #33, there must be a new Sentinel of Liberty and now Ross, one of the industry's most renowned artists, has created a dynamic new look for the seminal hero.
Marvel President of Publishing Dan Buckley explained, "Captain America is one of the true iconic super heroes of our time and to design the new look for a new Cap, we had to go with the most iconic, preeminent painter of our time-Alex Ross."
"We're excited to have Alex Ross so heavily involved in this landmark event," said David Gabriel, Senior Vice President of Sales & Circulation. "And we'd like to thank Dynamite Entertainment for their help in coordinating Alex's efforts on the Captain America costume redesign and cover."
To celebrate this landmark event, Captain America #34 will ship with two covers featuring the new Captain America-one by Ross and one by acclaimed series penciller Steve Epting! Additionally, a Captain America #34 By Alex Ross Poster will arrive in stores this January.
But just who is this new Captain America? And why did he pick this costume? The answers arrive this January in Captain America #34 featuring Alex Ross' new costume design for Captain America and a special variant cover by the legend himself! I think the new Captain America is going to be good, but not as great as Steve Rogers. With the art by Alex Ross I'm very excited to see what he comes up with in the costume for the new Captain America.

First, the costume looks very similar to Ross's rejected Spiderman movie costume. I really like Mr Ross's work, but I think he flubbed this one. I mean really, chrome? Chrome isn't flexible, how does he bend, raise his arms, move his head? Or bend over without stabbing himself? How does he even get his head in it? The gun and knife don't bother me, he's a soldier after all. But if you're going to make changes, the wings on his head and those silly buccaneer style boots have got to go. The best redesigned Cap costume has to be Brian Hitch's Ultimate Captain America - functionally updated and still true to the character.
Second, Steve Rogers is Captain America. Bruce Wayne is Batman, Clark Kent is Superman and Hal Jordan is the Green Lantern. Azrael couldn't cut it as Batman, the death of Superman was a joke, and Kyle Rainer... well they brought the originals back, didn't they. And yes the whole Dick Grayson/Jason Todd/Tim Drake, etc. Robin fiasco is silly, too. Characters can be updated and refreshed without killing them off and replacing them with different characters.
I see this as a marketing ploy to pump out more merchandising, Marvel is in business to make money and I don't begrudge them that. I've been buying comics for more than 35 years, when I don't like what's being published I stop buying, when it becomes interesting to me again, I start buying. This whole death arc is not the Captain America I want to read - I'll give the new Cap a few issues, then I'll most likely stop buying it.
I do see Steve Rogers making a comeback, the super soldier serum putting him into suspended animation while it repairs him. Then I'll probably start buying again - I just hope Marvel doesn't wait 20 years to do it this time.

Umm.... what's the difference? Pretty darned similar to the old costume. It'd have been "radical" if he'd gotten rid of those little wings on cap's head.

let steve rogers die. thats all i care about. u can wrap the new guy in cellophane for all i care, as long as u have the stones to stick to a major decision. i mean hell, even the 3 mainstay comic deaths (bucky, uncle ben, and jason todd) have been undoen in one way or another. just kill one important character and leave em dead, and i will be impressed. otherwise, stop the "oh my god, hes dead" storylines all together. they mean nothing until you're brave enough to follow through once in awhile. and as for the complaining about the suit being metal, well knights managed ok. some of the greatest warriors in history had metal chest plates. and besides, its the marvel universe. who's to say that it isn't some kind of flexible medal. hell, we already hae adimantium and vibranium. why not "flexanium" or something.

Captain America with a gun? No. Anyone other than Steve Rogers as Captain America? FUCK YOU MARVEL. Killing off my favorite hero is simply UNFORGIVABLE. Don't be surprised if I don't pick up another Marvel comic again. Oh and one other thing....
CAP WAS RIGHT!
