Remember the reports earlier this year that Preacher was headed to HBO, courtesy of writer/director Mark Steven Johnson and under the watchful eye of creators/producers Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon?Well, if, like me, you've been wondering about the status of the show and were concerned over the fact that no mention was made of Preacher in a recent HBO press release announcing upcoming series which are currently in production, you may be pleased to hear that more information has come to light. On the other hand, you may not. Read on.
According to industry insiders, it seems that production on the much-loved Vertigo series is on the very cusp of rolling except for the fact that HBO execs can't seem to make up their minds to give the final go-ahead necessary. Personally, given the muddleheaded thinking involved here, I'm willing to bet that these are the same execs responsible for the untimely cancellation of John from Cincinnati, the finest and most promising new series on televison since The Wire, but that's neither here nor there.
What's most important, however, is that if you want to see Preacher on HBO (and you know you do), it's time to let your voice be heard. The esteemed Rob Worley broke the news of the production logjam and provided all of the necessary contact information for the appropriate folks to contact at HBO in his piece at comics2film.com. I strongly encourage you to heed Rob's call and do your bit to help get this show on the air. Cheers.

I'll definitely head over to HBO and give them my 2 cents and 2 thumbs up. If anyone has a chance to do this story well, they can.
However, they could also blow it. I loved their series Carnivale when it started, but once shit started to get seriously weird, it fell apart. And Preacher has some seriously weird shit in it.
As for John from Cincinnati, I have to disagree with John. I tried to get into it, but when it was canceled I didn't even notice because I could no longer force myself to watch. It wasn't bad. It just wasn't that good. Or perhaps I can't take Luke Perry seriously.

While John from C started strong, IMO, I didn't even bother watching the last few episodes. It just lost me, and I can barely even tell you why or how I lost interest. Meanwhile, I think HBO is showing evidence of good sense elsewhere, because they had no problem re-upping Flight of the Conchords.
I also think they're utterly correct to debate over whether to make Preacher or not. I think it was a terrific comic book series for about two thirds of its run, and there's no reason for it ever to appear in a dumbed-down version that the change in medium would require. Do something original with Ennis expressly for television.
If they decide to go ahead, I'm sure I'll give it a watch. If they don't, I won't lose any sleep over it. There's so much great TV on these days it's incredible. The extra-shocking part is how much of it is on networks other than HBO.
